I put my entire music catalogue on my creative zen cause I'm a perfectionist but I'm never listening to it long enough to go through my entire music collection and I wouldn't think anyone would unless they were on a very long flight

There are many out there I would shop around and get the one with the biggest drive space for the least cash personally i own a wee 512mb mp3 player it holds five albums and twenty odd random songs on it which suits me down to the ground. I am not a fan of Itunes software and wouldnt purchase an apple for this reason.

Has anyone any experience with the iRiver? There is a 40gb one that looks quite useful and so much cheaper than the equivelent iPods.

Yep, they have a new range out plus they are; cheaper, have longer battery life, upgraded screen, quite a lot fo things really.

With the older Nano it would cost £99 for a 1GB, now you can get the new Nanon in 2GB for £99.

They make them in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB. I should be getting a 2GB for my birthday. (Would have been 4GB but I wanted to get Dan and Dave's Limited lecture notes. ^^)

Colour schemes are a bit rubbish with the new ones, and they dont have that gloss like the old ones did.

2GB the only colour you can get is Silver.
4GB you can get Pink, Blue, Green, Silver.
8GB The only colour is black.

They so should have made white ones.

I really like the look of the 8 gig nano! I already have a 30gig iPod video though... I recently took back my "faulty" one to get it replaced with the newly released range of 30GB iPods. The differences are subtle incase anyone was interested. They're all software based too (apart from apparently the screens brighter). Oh, and they dont supply an installation disk anymore so you better hope you have an internet connection where your music is but at least the replacement iPod I got isn't scratched to buggery :p

I think the scratching was probably the main reason for the nanos new aluminium casing. If you get a shiny iPod video or an "old version" nano, be sure to get a screen protector too since even the slip case which came with my first iPod scratched it!

As well as updating the nano and shuffle, apple also stopped doing a 60gig iPod and now have 80gigs crammed into the same space, apparently to accomodate full length movie films which are available on itunes (though probably only in america right now).

People hold alot of things against iPods, and I used to be the same. In all honesty though, they do their job better and more efficiently than any other mp3 player I've ever owned or used. They "just work" and thats the way technology should be right!? If you're looking for an mp3 player, I'd say you should deffinately consider the iPod and don't be put off by their trendyness!

Yeah, it's now more fashionable to slate iPods than it is to own one! Still, my 60GB photo does me well. It's my 2nd in a way, I had to send the first one back, but hey - they didn't quibble, so I'm happy.

The click wheel interface is just so intuitive! The battery life is fine so far, you just have to follow some common lithium battery sense: when you first get it, charge it right up, then let it run right down, then charge it right up again and afterwards charge it back to full when it reaches about 40% empty if poss. Periodically let it run right down and charge it right up again, and it should last as long as anything else using a modern rechargeable battery.

I think people mis-use the iPod and expect to get top battery life. It's hard drive based (well, the larger ones are) so it's got to mechanically move bits every time you select a new song. But when you queue up songs, say put an album on or let it run through an album/artist/genre/whole collection shuffle, it reads the songs once and puts them on a temporary flash memory. If you do this most of the time, and set the back light to minimal settings (ie. goes off not long after you stop touching the wheel), you are likely to have no problems with battery life. If however you belong to the MTV (or rather, ADHD...) generation and choose a song, listen to 80% of it then put on the back light to choose another song etc etc, it has to access the HD every few minutes plus use the backlight more = "poor battery life". This will be the same for all HD (ie. large capacity) mp3 players - until they find a way to make compact, large capacity flash memory. The nanos are flash based memory so should be better for this.

My only beef with iPods is iTunes, or rather, the limitations Apple imposes. This is a bit frustrating, but there are a wealth of help forums out there, and with a fine selection of 3rd party software out there (iPod plugins for die-hard Winamp users, Ephpod, Sharepod and iGadget to name a few) it's really not that challenging to do anything you want with them.

Go 'Pods!

I do not have iPod but I am APPLE user since the first 128KB Macintosh (1983??), so if I will get one MP3 player it will be iPod.
I am thinking to use it in my profession. Download in it some 10 musics the day before the show, and with the remote control start the music I need without too many efforts (I know, an assistant would be better..).
Problem is that I have to know in which music number my iPod is, and for this I have seen an interesting ad. on "The Linking Ring":

www.virtualsoundman.com

is it worth its price? Has anybody tried it?

Next: I need an amplifier. What abou the active speakers?
Could I use the Apple ones (iPod HiFi). How many Watts does it have?

Thanks if you have any comment..
