How often do you practice?

Postby Mantis » Oct 5th, '06, 13:17

Just wondering how often you practice. I just started about a year ago and I dont think I practice nearly enough. I am always carrying coins and a back pack in my truck but dont take advantage of free time. I feel like I am at a flat spot and keep forgetting the tricks I have learned. WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!

my suggestion would be:

pick 3-5 sleights and stick with them for a month or so til you're settled with them

pick 3-5 effects that use them and stick with them for a month too....

find a way to link each effect to the next with suitable patter/storyline...

just my idea anyway...after a while i found i just stick to my fave sleights and just keep an eye open for any others that would be useful for the stuff i perform and like...and add as i go...

The amount you practice should correlate with the quality, difficulty, and performances you intend to use.

If you are very casual then casual practice is fine...but if you wish to perform with more quality and more difficult sleights, you will need to practice more often.

I almost always have a deck of cards in my pocket!

When do I practice? When I should be doing work for uni...! Appallingly I've shirked most of this term's work so far and usually end up messing around with magic instead.

Then again, I can do a "what the hell happened to Sybil?" flourish cut, my coursemates can't... who's missing out :P

But, seriously, if it's cards then just sit infront of that special type of soul-destroying and banal TV (eg. most of it) and do it until you don't have to think about it.

I personally practise for about 3 hours a day with cards, coins and mentalism effects forces etc. What i do is practise coin rolls and different coin sleights while im eating dinner. This is because if im eating im not thinking about the coin and if im doing it properley and not thinking about it that is a good sign. Also i practise with the coin the same time im practise with cards at the same time so im not thinking about either of them to much and if you can do both at once it becomes a lot easier when you do actually use one item. It takes a lot of practise and messing up but ive found it very worthwhile.

I've just picked up magic as a hobby and suddenly I'm researching and practicing for hours at a time. Must...work...on...thesis...

I write for a living, and my writing table is basically where I keep about 6 decks in different states, plus one for simply shuffling when I'm reading or thinking, so I suppose I practice on and off all day. I can spend hours reading turgid reseach papers and just sending a card from the top to the middle to the bottom to the middle to the top.

Practice is something which you should WANT to do, not feel compelled to do.

Magic isn't like gym training, or army training—it's not compulsory or necessary to push yourself to your limits. However, it is your CHOICE as to the frequency and intensity of your practice.

Personally, I *enjoy* practicing card moves etc. whilst watching TV, listening to music, etc. I *enjoy* practicing coin moves while on trains, in cafes, or pubs.

I also *enjoy* practicing new sleights and tricks when I have the time free to study the books or media which contains them.

The more you *enjoy* it, the more you will practice. I tend to find that if anything appears as a chore or dead end, I just drop it until such a time I feel more suitably composed to attempt to learn it—an example of which would be a one-handed second deal—CURSE YOU Rene Lavand!!! (:o)

So, personally, I practice whenever and wherever I can. Rarely do I not have a deck of cards or a couple of half-dollars at hand. And carrying a TT with me is now almost as essential as wearing my socks.

I practice about 3 hours a day in inconsistent portions of minutes. And then of cousre when I do shows, that's where the real test of skill comes into play.

I practice at every convienient moment, especially coin and card slights.
I try to dedicate at least 15 minutes solid practice a day and a lot of reading.
I try and study each principle I wish to learn so that it's fully understood and second nature.

I almost always practice on the journey to work and back home again....and luckily I dont drive in.
I find sitting or standing on the train practicing my double lifts, colour changes, false cuts and shuffles makes my journey go quicker and every now and then someone taps me on the shoulder and asks the classic "how did you do that?" and before I know it I'm performing on the train which is also good for my performing experience.

Saying all that though spilling the cards everywhere on public transprt is pretty embarrassing.
