Balloon Magic / Animals / Modelling

Postby king_of_keighley » Oct 11th, '06, 17:08

Can anyone recommend a book/dvd to learn balloon modelling. I have tried searching for a review of a book/dvd but to no avail.

If there is already a review of a balloon book could someone post a link.
I have searched but to be honest I'm sure the search function on this site is the worst thing..(no offence!)

cheers

Flash is your man when it comes to baloon modelling. look up some of his posts as I recall him making a recommendation but I'm sure that he will be here soon and will make a few recommendations

The Palloncini books are good in my opinion. They've got a good range of stuff from swords to giant disney characters. In saying that, they're the only balloon modelling books I own so there might be something better.
You can get them from playtime balloons or from magicbox.

Before i stopped doing children's parties i learnt the models from the DVD "Balloon modelling made easy" It is by Royal magic and should be around £10. Models includes parrot on a swing, rocking horse, teddy bear, rabbit, dogs etc.

Did someone mention my name?

Personally once you know a couple of basic twists I advocate buying some balloons and a pump and just trying to work out your own models, trial, error and lots of practice will show you what works and what doesn't (maybe invest in some ear protectors if you are working in a small echoey room though) Buy either Qualatex (my favourites) or Sempertex, get yourself a decent two way pump (MasterBlaster 2 for example) and just play!

That said I am reliably informed that the best DVD/Videos you can get are by the late great David "Twisty" Grist. I haven't seen them myself... but I have seen some of the models he made before his untimely death, suffice to say he was a master.

Alternatively any of the aforementioned books will probably be helpful, the Palloncini books have some top models in (I really must get hold of them some day).

Most stuff I do is either my own design or I see something someone else has made and work out my own version.

Hope that helps old bean...

Oh crikey, Friday afternoon and Flash just has to use words like 'MasterBlaster' :? .

As a complete klutz at balloon modelling I can strongly recommend you ask the child what kind of animal he would like. Assuming they ask for 'Elephant' (or any other beast) just say 'OK, this elephant went to a fancy dress party….dressed as a dog'. (They all look like dogs when I make 'em!)

What about a dogosaur? or a Dogophant?

Or "so what animal would you like? woof woof!!" (my mate says its quite a good way of forcing them to ask for a dog)

Your best bet is to try Butterfingers. Click on 'Books and Magazines' on the left hand side and you'll see their range of balloon books. I can thoroughly recommend 'All Wind and Twists' - it's full of basic models that are really quite impressive to the person you're modelling for.

The previously mentioned Balloon Modelling Made Easy. Supplied everything I needed to create the requests at my nieces birthday party. All the boys wanted swords and laser guns and all the girls wanted....well most of them wanted swords and laser guns too.
Once you have got used to the idea that you are being taught by a man in FULL CLOWN MAKEUP! it's actually a very good beginners resource.

YEah, you'll find that kids will ask for whatever someone else has got, so that they are not missing out... Once you've made a sword for a boy, ALL the girls will ask for a sword too. Strange, but true (also a right result because swords are SO easy to make!).
