Are you a medium or something?

Postby taneous » Oct 21st, '06, 10:02

I get asked some interesting questions sometimes when I'm performing. I have a set of things that i usually respond with - but these two were of the cuff:

In response to some mind reading:
Are you like a medium or something?
No - I think I'm more of a large to extra large..

In response to some bent cutlery:
Were you born like this?
Um - no I was quite a bit smaller with a whole lot less hair..

;)

Thats good its funny. I think you have come up with some very funny ideas there which is good if your a pro because it breaks the ice between you and the spectator. What i usually say if im gonna do a mind reading effect is:

me: I am going to try and read your mind
Spec: um ok
me: Do you believe in mind reading
spec: yes
me: Good because i dont

This i find good because it adds that strange feeling and it gets some good laughs and makes the spectators intrigued. I dont know if i believe in it or not personally but i say this because it leaves the spectators a bit freaked out to how i did it after. I usually get the response after of the spectators saying your wierd, i dont like it or thats freaky and to me hats a nice feeling :)

I can just imagine those guys from the Cafe visiting Talk Magic and thinking...

"My gosh, these youngsters are weird. Wait till they've done Magic for 40 years like us, then they'll get it."

(Mandrake probably feels the same way.)

But seriously, yeah, I do the same thing. Its so much fun when people really believe you have powers. Its like they think we're supernatural. All in good fun however.

Just to clarify - when I perform I would never tell people what I'm doing isn't real - some of what I do is and a lot of what I do borders on being real. All of the effects I do are the kin that leave one thinking that they could be witnessing the real thing - in fact i aim for that, but at the same time it's combined with a bit of good humour at the same time.

Magicians do in fact have special powers - they have the power to get people to see things that aren't there and not see things that are. They have the power to create a sense of mystery - with something as simple as an elastic band or a coin. I think the reason people don't take magic seriously is because magicians don't - most magcians have forgotten the real ability they have to do real magic..

You know what the biggest cleche (pardon my spelling) in magic is?

"Magic isn't real."

I think this is ironic because if they simply knew what magic was, it would be so obvious that it is real. Many think "Magic" is supernatural powers. I looked up the definition in a dictionary. This "Magic" that we speak of is the presentation of illusions made to appear as if created by the use of supernatural abilities.

Makes you think, huh?
