We've just finished creating a small lecture set for school pupils wishing to take on graphic/web design as a career... and here's something we noted...
Based on a recent job interview we gave, we actually gave the position to a girl who was useless on computers but whose pen and paper skills displayed her creativity, thought process, and method. Which were excellent. We can live with that.
We spoke to a couple of friendly design agencies locally, who said they'd had their fair share of 'would-be Photoshop jockeys'—which is a term we use here for kids who have aspirations of becoming designers because they've discovered how the layers palette works in their pirated version of Photoshop.
All very, very interesting stuff. But the basic observation is, even using the LIMITED tools you may already have learned in a photo editing package, if you've got an idea in your mind and even SOME common sense about composition, communication and balance you will make something which looks right.
