If I'm not very much mistaken, when ordering over the internet, it is the sole responsibility of the vendor to ensure the goods arrive.

This is true, if the "vendor" can be proven to be trading as a company as I believe is the case here, it's all to do with distance selling regulations.

Remember, if you buy stuff off t'internet from some person on ebay remember distance selling rules cannot and do not apply currently.

Purchases from individual private sellers always boil down to Caveat Emptor (I forget the literal translation but I think the best descriptions are "buyer beware" or "sold as seen")

You can track Royal Mail parcels online here if you have the 13 digit recorded/special delivery reference, if you don't have the reference don't even bother emailing, as discussed previously the RM will email you back asking things like where it was sent from, who to, the 13 digit reference number, then you send them all the detail they ask for (apart from the reference number as you don't know it) and they will then email you back 2 weeks later and say pretty much as follows "sorry bud, without the 13 digit ref no we can't help ya!"

Also, on the insurance, beware I've had a couple of things damaged in the post recently (one of these was a guitar in a flight case just to get an idea of what I'm talking about here, how they'd managed to damage it I'll never know), basically RM employ a loss adjuster / damage & repair "expert" to come round and inspect the damage and more importantly the packing, from my experience they then write back to RM and say that the packing was insufficient don't pay the claim! However I must say, as always, this is just my experience/opinion.

hope this helps.

I visited my parents in the North East in December, and took the opportunity to call into the Magic Box in Newcastle.

Okay, I was only there long enough to drool over the merch and buy the three-book Art of Astonishment series, but came away with the impression that they're very genuine and helpful people.

I've since bought from them online and experienced no problems whatsoever.

IF it helps in any way, I'venever had any problems with magicbox, and I believe their reputation to be right in the top-flight of UK internet magic retailers.

No, I'm not on commission, but credit where it's due.

Good luck with your missing stuff.

I like many on here have used Magicbox and find them very reliable. Perhaps it was some people in the flat below. But do you think I should expect MagicBox to redeliver? How do you think I should approach this if it is the sole responsibility of the vendor to ensure the goods arrive.

Thanks as always - very helpful

If Magic Box posted your goods by recorded delivery, they should have a tracking number and be able to chase things up on their end. I would imagine that there'll be a record of whether the package was signed for and by whom.

If they have to send out a duplicate package, then I'm sure they can claim compensation from the Royal Mail. I buy a lot of stuff mailorder, from a lot of different sources, and on the very rare occasion when things get lost in the post, the vendor has always posted out a replacement without complaint. And I personally view this as a litmus test of mailorder traders and helps me decide whether or not I'll buy from them again.
