Kevin Trudeau's Mega Memory systems used to be sold on QVC in the UK but they seem to have changed to promoting Paul McKenna's systems in recent times.

Anyway, there was this product by Kevin Trudeau called "Mega Memory." During the show, he took one person and gave them 20 words, then took them backstage to teach him the memory system for 10 minutes. So this person had to memorize 20 words in 10 minutes. And he recited them all, frontwards, backwards, they would calll a number, and he would say the word. I thought that was pretty cool, so I bought the product (it was a series of audio tapes). And the first lesson teaches the 20 word quick memorization. And it didn't use the memory pegs. It was association. here were the 20 words:

1 - tree
2 - light switch
3 - stool
4 - car
5 - glove
6 - gun
7 - dice
8 - skate
9 - cat
10 - bowling ball
11 - goal post
12 - eggs
13 - witch
14 - diamond
15 - paycheck
16 - chocolate
17 - magazine
18 - voting booth
19 - golf club
20 - pack of cigarettes

Now at first glance, it doesn't look that easy, but it was all about about associating the number and the word. For example, 2 was light switch, so just remember that a light switch has two positions, on and off. 10 is bowling ball, just remember there are 10 pins in bowling, and you bowl 10 frames.

Each of those words are easy to remember. This was 11 years ago that I listened to those tapes, and I still remember all 20 words.

Seems a good technique, but those items seem definitely ordered on purpose to be easy to match to the numbers. Pretty biased/simplified but I see the merits of the method.

Corinda's views on this memory system are similar, but take it one step further... Buy 13 Steps to Mentalism and you'll pick it up in no time.

There are countless memory systems about. When I was a kid you used to get these books called Smart Alecs... or Whizz-kids... or something similar. They were all along the lines of convincing your classmates and teachers that you were some kind of boffin. There were loads of different ways of memorizing loads of information or how to calcuate maths problems really fast.

Basically, anything that makes information meaningful will help you appear to have a great memory. When you use a system (unknown to the audience) you appear to be recounting meaningless informaton when you are actually repeating isolated parts of a meaningful text.

I've gone through a whole lot of memory books and learning how to memorize stuff, and yet I still dont know how Derren does it, that when he glances at a couple of buttons he knows exactly how many there are...

In one of his shows he said that he used to get beat up by a kid alot and to distract him from the pain he used to count everything that fell out of his schoolbag, like words on a page, etc, and that he has associated pain with rapid calculations... after that he asks the lady to smack him real hard and he can count all the buttons precisely.

Counting buttons isn't memory. I've got an idea how the button counting is done, but I can't be sure unless I actually try it.

Care to clearify my mind?

I thought something like counting 1 colortype first or something.

We had a couple of threads on the button counting aspect last year, or the year before that, and they were locked/deleted because of all the guessing which went on - one or two guesses were spot on, apparently!

Hi, Don't know if anyone has mentioned this already - if they have, sorry!

In Derren's current book 'Tricks of the Mind' there is a great section on memory. I maged to memorise an entire deck in 15 mins at the first attempt using his method; for a 42 year old who can't remember his kids' names that's not bad!

Give it a shot - even if it doesn't help your memory, it's a really entertaining read.

mandrake, My girlfriend is doing an occupational therapy degree and I noticed a few good books and tapes regarding memory and the like. One of them was the mega memory system that you mentioned above. It is about 10 tapes.
Any idea if it is worth the time and effort? Not the memory expansion by the way, I mean this particular method.

There is also another book on her shelf called (i think) mind map which I am currently delving into.

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

I didn't go as far as buying Kevin's tapes, they were just something which I remembered being advertised. I've read books where memory systems are mentioned, including the standard idea of memorising a list of words and associating those words in a humorous way with a new list so you can easily remember them but it just wasn’t something I could usefully use - if I have to remember a lot of items I find it much easier to jot them down on a bit of paper  !
