Paperclipped - Jay Sankey

Postby Jordan C » Feb 12th, '04, 18:18

The Effect

A card is held folded in a paperclip and is placed on the table as a prediction. A card is then chosen at random by a spectator from the pack. The card is returned to the deck, the deck is cut/shuffled, tidied up and placed on the table. The paperclipped prediction card is then picked up and the paper clipped removed. The folded card is then partially opened and placed on the table. The spectator passes out as they realise the folded card is in fact their freely chosen and signed card!!!

Review

If I had known before I bought this DVD I was going to learn the MCF I would have balked at thought. That said though thanks to this DVD my ability to learn the MCF has been greatly assisted.

Unless you already know the move you are not going to be performing this effect straight away. It is going to take some practice and some cards so order yourself a few packets or even a brick. I managed to get the move down in the first two packets but it took until I was about halfway through my fourth packet before it started to become impercitible. I also chose to only go through half a packet a time practicing believing in the ethos that for best knowledge intake you should practice a little often rather than long sessions of frustrated learning.

Jay Sankey is funny and very helpful. He talks to you and not down at you in a condescending manner which makes learning easier (I hate it when it seems as though you are watching a magic edition of blue peter). He is very clear on what and how to do everything. Once you have mastered the MCF you are away and ready but please do yourself a favour and dont kid yourself that you're ready if you aren't. When performed properly this is a very very powerful effect and is a good closer to your card routines. However if you perform this badly you are going to look very stupid and will ruin the impact of what should be a knock-em-dead effect.

Also included on the DVD are 5 bonus routines which all have equally impressive results. For instance a routine where there are four $100 bills on the table folded and held by paperclips. The spectator is given a choice of any four folded notes and is told they can keep their choice. They choose one and you remove the paperclip and unfold the bill to reveal it as a $1 bill which you give to them. you then take the clips off of each of the other notes showing them all to be $100 bills and therfore compounding the fact that you're spectator is a very unlucky person!!

Overall

Can I give this 12 out of 10???? Well I dont care, I'm going to anyway!!! This was my absolute favourite effect that I acquired for christmas. Jay has made a much feared card sleight (when read as text instructions) fairly straight forward and has given me a new found card confidence.

Although I got the moves down within 4 decks of cards I went through about 9 or 10 decks before attempting to perform this to anyone other than my partner and my closest friend. It really is a powerful effect and should be enough to blow even the hardest of critics away!!

I also love this trick and would always give it 10/10 everytime.

if anyone has the trick on Best of Jay Sankey vol 3 I still would urge you to get the Paperclipped tape/dvd because it just goes in to so much more detail and other ways of performing this great effect.

I agree this is an excellent effect (definitely a 10/10). However, I do think it takes quite a bit of work to get this looking smooth and convincing (unless you have already mastered the key move). This is definitely not something most people will be performing the day after they buy it. I certainly spent a lot of time practicing before I felt confident enough to perform it. Once you've got looking good though it is a killer.

I'm in the process of learning this trick. As soon as I saw Jay Sankey perform it, I knew I had to master it -- at all costs. It's that good. I've been going through deck after deck trying to get this right...

Question for those of you who perform it: are you able to do the key move without making any noise? If not, do you find the noise generated by the move to be a problem? Thanks for any and all advice.

Initially I worried about the noise but if you get the misdirection right no one ever notices. Are you learning from the Paperclipped DVD or Sankeytized as the Paperclipped DVD covers the construction of the routine in detail. This helps quite a lot when trying to get comfortable with the move. I now do the move quite slowly (unlike Jay) and it makes hardly any noise (so you could try that). However, even when done fast the noise generally goes unnoticed if you have the presentation right. You should also use the riffle before and after as suggested on the DVD. The only other thing I can say is don't be afraid of the move (as I was initially), provided you are confident with your presentation you will be amazed at what you can get away with. Obviosuly practice, practice, practice as well.

The move is made in the process of squaring the cards so if you are chatting away whilst you do this and you Rifle the cards both before and after (or at least definitely after the move) then most heat is taken off of you.

On the Paperclipped DVD Jay really does slow the whole move down and show you how to get the best out of the move. I haven't seen Sankeytised so I cant comment on his presentation of the effect there.

I also agree that a slow performance of the move eradicates all noise but if you are going to do the move slowly it may be more important to misdirect than when performing the move quickly followed by a rifle of the cards. Perhaps when performing slowly you should get your spectator to divert their eyes to the paperclipped card on the table. You pull the move off and then pick up the paperclipped card......... well you know the rest!!!

DITTO DITTO DITTO

It is SOOOOOOOO IMPORTANT to practice this effect. If you dont you may end with lots of egg on your face but if you do you have the power to stun, astound and if you're very lucky woo the female members of your spectating group!!

Thanks for the tips. I've been learning the routine from the Best of Sankey, Vol. 3. Sounds like I might want to get Paperclipped for further handling advice.

In the meantime, I'll keep working at it. My wife is continually astounded at the number of folded up playing cards in the trash can.
