Restaurant Magic

Postby Michael Kras » May 22nd, '07, 22:01

Hello,

I really want to get into restaurant magic. I have a lot of experience with restaurant magic, where I have asked to work for tips at a restaurant for an hour or two during a special event.

I have a few questions: How do I get hired by a restaurant and make them feel like they NEED me as a magician?

How much should I charge per hour is I work one night a week for 3 hours?

How do I get restaurants to take me seriously enough to consider hiring me?

How long should I stay at a single table?

I own Jay Sankey's fantastic DVD on the subject and it answers so many big questions and gives tons of advice, but those questions above were not answered for me.

Thank you!

Michael Kras

I have emailed him about it, and he answered it well, but ot in a way I eas looking for. You know I don't know himp personally right? OH but I wish I do! He lives about 40 minutes away from me and I have never even seen him live. I will be seeing his lecture in a few months... a few buds and I are trying to get him.

it's like an oxymoronic sentence.

anyway, to take you seriously: honestly, and i don't mean this in a harsh way but.. turn 18! you're, what, 14? most restaurants are going to find it hard to seriously employ someone of your age, and as for pay, there's no laws about what they'd have to pay you, so expect their offers to be Very low. again, speaking from a UK-based point of view.
best thing you could do would be to write a letter explaining who you are and what you do and what services you offer for what prices and send it to the managers of the local places, and certainly the places you've already worked with. and then hope someone is interested.

as for making them feel they need you, have a read of Derren Brown's - Pure Effect, if you can find it, it has a lovely little bit about how to make venue managers like you more.

Custom R&S decks made to specification - PM me for details

Ah Mr Kras we meet again...

I dont think you are old enough to wait tables just yet. I slay me i really do.

If you have the expirance already surely you shouldnt be asking us how to? I have years of working on cars can some one tell me how to change a spark plug. And how will you cope in a resturant envoriment when other magicians dont think you are that good how you going to react to the specs.

Now wait 4 years get 4 more years of expirance under your belt (by then you be able to palm that card and lecture to 40 people) . We appluad your go do it attitude but go be 14 for a while :D. I doubt many resturants will employ a kind with duct tape to entertain the patrons.

But if you want to go for it go there do a few tricks while having a meal......

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Thank you, but there are many my age that work restaurants. And other magicians won't tell me that I am not good to my face. Except maybe Markdini, who is just like that (I SLAY me, I really do) :)

The advice is still unknown to me, since like I said, I worked the restaurants for only about one hour for about $100-200 in tips.

Why not just keep doing that then? That seems like pretty good money for a 14 year old.

Oh yes they would. Loads of people but remember its constuctive not lets all kill Micheal Kras.. I thought most 14 year olds was getting urban and gritty doing street magic. Why dont you go back to where you made the money the first time?

You made that much in tips for a single hour's work in one restaurant?

I don't do that Ellusionist c*** (not the best). I do more theatrical magic and more classy magic, as some may see from my lecture. I love to study the psychology behind magic and such, so why would you automatically stereotype and asume I am a Ellusionist lover who posts exposure videos on Youtube and who doesn't put the presentation and practice into effects?" A person who likes to scare rather than entertain?

Yeah did you make $150 then you either made 100 or 200 not between unless you was doing more then one hour. And please let me know of these 14 year old magicians.

I'm sorry, but that is not what magic is about. Surely you should ultimately aim to entertain, playing with such emotions as a way of achieving your target, should you not?
