Screwing Up- Ways To Get Out Of It

Postby Michael Kras » Jun 5th, '07, 17:05

Hello,

Ever accidentally expose or mess up a magic effect and be at a loss for word? Here are some good lines to get out of it smoothly:

" Hmm... It worked at the magic store!"

"CUPS doesn't allow for sufficient practice."

"Wow! It's so quiet here, you could hear my career drop."

Anyone else have any other lines? Please let us all know!

Thank you!

Surely that would make no sense, as no-one outside of this forum is aware of the concept of "CUPS".

One time I was doing a 'pick a card, put it back, reveal' trick for these two women in a bar. The first woman put her card back and I lost my break, losing her card in the deck forever. So what did I do? Turn, with a cheeky smile on my face, to the second woman, and say "Your mate was rubbish. I'm sure you'll be much better. Pick a card."

They thought it was funny, and I did the trick. No worries.

The CUPS comment was written as a joke. Sorry about not clarifying!

"Ah well at least your not watching Michael Kras". (I'm only joking so don't take offence).

I don't make a big deal about it, just move on to the next trick. It can be good for things like deck switches- pretend to put the cards away then so about one more and pull out ID or something.

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

When I once lost the spectator's card in the deck, I got out my other deck, pretending I was meaning to do this earlier and did a two-deck "Do as I do". Noone ever remembered that an original card had been selected. Or just then hand that deck to another spectator and ask them to try to find the card, and when they can't, just take out another deck, have another card selected and ask the spectator to do everything exactly as you do it.

Hehehe. Do as I do is beautiful, yet so easy to do and simple principle. I get good reactions on this one. Good thing to use this trick as way out.

If I mess up a trick I will say '' Can you believe I actually get paid for this !! ''

for the mostpart.. if I lose a card in the deck and I know what it is.. ill run through and cull to a position near the top, then get them tostop me anywhere as I run through the deck face down.. it will be their card.. using a cull force.

lines though

'' These trick decks never work properly ''

'' I should have paid more attention at Hogwart ''

'' sorry I cant concentrate with you looking so sexy.. you want to invite me in for a coffee and I show you real mans magic 8) ''

Mike, don't you know that good magicians never mess up??

Geez, if you mess up, you're clearly not ready to sell an effect or lecture notes.

Im hoping this is sarcasm :s
Everyone messes up sometimes but perhaps good magicians just cover it up so well you don't even notice :P

I try and improvise, for examble by saying 'so... what was your card?' When I find out I talk about it being interesting and try and get it to the bottom then lay the deck on the table and talk about their favorite number, then tell them how amazing it would be if their card was then at that position. Pick up the deck and perform the end of 'design for laughter' from RRTCM. If you know what I mean

Still gets a 'wow' effect....

Oddly enough, it was Design For Laughter that I was performing when I lost their card in the middle of the deck rather than having it at the bottom.

Still love that trick though, did it again yesterday and it got just as great a reaction as usual.
