Generally, if I mess up a card effect, and have lost a chosen card, I'll switch straight into 3rd Degree Burn.

If I've stuffed up, and revealed a card which wasn't theirs, I'll simply explain it along the lines of..."Well, that WOULD have been your card - but you card actually seems to have vanished from the deck completely - this is the card that was NEXT to it, before it went  "...and then go into 3DB

If you do card magic let me recommend a wonderful book that was written a long time ago. If you study it you will never mess up again or if you do you will know what to do about it.

"Outs, Precautions and Challenges" by Charles Hopkins.

I always wondered whether this would work as it works so well for hecklers.. try this..

If you mess up a trick.. theres a good chance you'll get heckled if you dont have an out, so..

punch em in the nose!! try and break it if possible!!

If you can knock em out.. you can then find their card, plant it in their pocket, run away and when they wake up their card will be in the pocket, you have vanished.. and they will never experience a climax like that ever again!!

I try to have a few outs, if I loose a selected card I'll usually pull out an ID and create some patter to link it to what I was doing and then reveal their chosen card using the ID.

If it really goes pear shaped and there's no way out I'll usually just smile and say 'oh well you wouldn't have liked that one anyway'. and move on to something else.

one thing i do when i mess up a trick, is give the spectator the deck of cards and pull out my back up while making some comment of how that deck is no longer magical.

also, i seldom mess up to the extent that i can't recover. since i relay heavily on forces and glimpses i quite often know their card before they pick it so i can always do the scan through the deck and make it look like i have to do this for that trick, also after i look through the deck and find their card i always shuffle the deck and "lose" it.

The other day i was doin some card tricks and i messed up a couple times, but the person just thought every time it was part of the trick because i recovered nicely

"well if I was any good, I wouldn't be performing for sad, smelly losers like you in a run down place like this now would I?"

I messed up a signed ACR the other day. Found an excellent out (moment of inspiration!). It does require a Bladucci wallet, tho...

Openly look through the faces of the cards and cut selected to the top. Palm off, hand deck to spectator to find card. Load selected into wallet and you've turned a mistake into a feat of magic!
