If you can find it, you might consider giving Matting Solution a go. I use it in French polish to get rid of the shine. It's a suspension of a very fine pumice in a VERY hard modified shellac polish. I experimented on some decks yesterday and have had great fun thinking up different ways to use it.

It needs to be applied by hand using a cloth (mutton cloth is best) rolled up into a small wad. It has a milky appearance is odourless and dries completely colourless in about 20 mins.

If you want to experiment for yourself you can get it here if you live in the UK.

It's called MATT POLISH ADDITIVE. Or goes by the name of MATTING SOLUTION.
LT12 is their stock number. I buy it by the gallon, but it's about £10.00 for ½ a Litre, which should last you many years or many decks. Shake the bottle well.

With a bit of thought, I've got a deck that shows different cards depending on which direction you spread the deck.

It works and is very durable.

Hi all :)

I've just been out to look for some of the suggested alternatives to roughing fluid but couldn't find any exact matches. Found afew things that I thought looked similar though and in my haste bought all of them. Can anyone tell me if any of the following work before I end up ruining my cards?

Bostik Fast-Tak Repositionable

Acrylic Clear Matt paint

Plasti-Kote Fast Dry Enamel (I'm serious, I figured the "kote" part of the brand name was similar to the testors dullkote. Ok Clutching and straws are two things that come to mind!)

Any advice appreciated. If none of the above work then I may be forced to join my wife at craft class for the next few weeks :(

The Bostik won't work as roughening fluid - it's re-positional glue that will make the cards stick instead of spreading.

You best chance is using the clear matt paint.

Out of interest, how much did that lot cost you? It oulw have been cheaper to buy the proper stuff mail order :?

Yeah, I should have waited but my impatience got the better of me .

It wasn't too much, probably about 8 quid in all. I'll try the paint first then. If that doesn't work then I'll just use that deck to test the others and use it for practicing if they still seperate

Thanks for coming back with some feedback as I'm sure that this will be of interest to some.

It's always good to know the outcome of someone elses experimentation as it can save us time and effort, yet provide a potential solution for the future.

I'm pleased that it worked.

Your welcome. But I've just had to give them another coat. The first coat worked great, until the morning and the cards didn't seem to stick as well as before. I guess they hadn't dried fully to start with. I've given them another coat and I'll keep you informed if it improves things

intuition,

You haven't given any details about yourself, such as where you are ? Now that doesn't give anyone who wants to help, a clue as to what your country has available does it ??

Try thinking in future.

In the UK, as I've said before on previous threads, the thing to use is available at art shops, its Letraset 103 Mat Coating and is used by numerous professionals. Keith Bennett put me on to it. Yeah, it costs more than a bottle of cheap roughing fluid at your local magic shop, but it works !! And it works properly.

How many times, and on how many threads, do I have to say this. Don't try to find the cheap way out, just get what does it ?

Excuse me? I've just joined this forum and I'm completely new to any of these posts. I think I asked a fair question and anybody who didn't want to help didn't have to.

I'm sorry if I offended your obviously fragile temperement with my ignorance, but mate, take yourself off of your self righteous pedistal it's not attractive.

As for your many posts, which of course, EVERYBODY should read BEFORE daring to ask a sensible question, well I'll get round to them.

And you're an entertainer who deals with people regularly?

It's far easier just to buy a tin of roughing spray and have done with it. Think art shops
