Derren Brown books - Pure Effect & Absolute Magic

Postby HanMan » Jun 11th, '07, 01:33

Just thought I'd share this with the world...

https://illusionstore.com/

I 'seem' to have ordered both books for less than 50 quid inc P&P from the good ol' US of A.

I'll let you know if they turn up (and if they're the genuine article) but I've no reason to be suspicious so far. Took me a while to find it mind....

Any experience of 'illusionstore.com' anyone?

Cheeeeeers.

Chris.

Hi.

What kind of stuff does he have in these books?

I'm intrigued now! They sound great, but I didn't know they existed.

Sounds like they'll be my next purchase - if I can find them.

These are out of print now and 'apparently' Derren himself pulled 'Pure Effect' coz it gave too much away. They're going for like 70 quid EACH on eBay so I'm a bit suspicious as to whether this is the real deal, but I'll let you know as I say.

Absolute Magic has some routines but is more concerned with presentation and effect. I believe it has a good section on pick-pocketing (not that I need that - I'm a Manc  )

Pure Effect is, if the hype is to believed, a fantastic book on mentalist routines and reveals a lot about Derren's actual techniques.

I'm still a bit sceptical that I've got these 2 out-of-print books for almost half the price of one of them, but I've had an email receipt and all looks good so far. Here's hoping.....

That'll be fantastic if they are.

Don't suppose you know the name of a trick he did - he gets a member of the audience to grab buttons and place them on a tray. He looks for a couple of seconds and accurately gets the total amount.

I'd really like some info if I can get it, but didn't know if it had a name...

Back to the books - the fact they're out of print makes me want them even more now!!!

Went to see him last Tuesday. Absolute Magic (apologies!).

I know the routine you're talking about but not sure if it has a 'name' as such. 'Smarties' maybe? lol... (He's done it with these sweet things I think)

If you try this one in his style, wear a gum-shield....

I went last month to see him as well. It was such a great show!

The year before I got to stand on him when he laid in some broken glass. He never disappoints with his overall performance.

Those books are so expensive!!!

yes, pls do let us know if you get them, Pure Effect is selling for up to US$200 on eBay, while Absolute Magic usually sells around $100.

personally, if they are selling them for US$40 each i would be surprised, more likely a publicity stunt in which i trust you're not involved mate.

however, if it's genuine and you get them... well done!

Bobby.. definitely not involved mate! If it IS a publicity stunt I'll be VERY upset (and probably incommunicado for a while again!). I'll definitely let you all know though, coz I won't believe I've finally got hold of these for this price until they drop on my doorstep. There will be trouble if they don't (money has already gone from my account, so I expect!)

I know how much these go for, which is why I'm so surprised at this site selling them for this amount (and next to nothing on postage)! In fact, I'm getting more suspicious as time goes on. Might email them with a question (as I said, its a USA shop so I'm completely reliant on internet - can't pop in and 'explain the situation' lol)....

I'll let you know mate...

I think he asked for both books not to be re-printed. I doubt it was because he felt they revealed too much though (that sounds like what someone who was selling one might say). The second and subsequent editions of Pure Effect had two routines removed because they were felt to be 'signature' effects that he was still using at the time. First editions go for bonkers money (not really justified by anything other than the rarity value).

H&R (the publishers) claim they have found a last few copies of PE and they are selling them for $100. These aren't the first eds.

Hmmm... a bit concerning. Had a look at emailing them as mentioned earlier but can't find any contact info on their site. Site looks cosher, they have secure ordering pages and I've got the receipts but we will wait and see....

If you register with them you can track your order. However, in my excitment I didn't bother, just ordered them as a one-off so not able to track it now. If I DO get these at this price they'll be getting a big commendation....

Why didn't I think of that Chris??? Probably the shock at seeing it advertised at this price!

I've emailed the seller now and await a reply.....
