Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

repeatable? but the patter i use is" earlyer I removed a card from a different deck and placed it in the deck"/(or for ID) "i turned one card face down in the pack prior to this anticipating your thought of card" how can you get around this if repeated to the same spectator and cause them to think its "magic"/mentalism and not just a mechanical deck?

You can't do it as a prediction type thing if you want to repeat, but I use a patter of symmetry between a real deck that I hand them and the invisible one I have. I get them to take a card out of their deck and slowly turn it over whilst waving it over my deck. This, I lead them to believe, causes the same card to turn over in the deck I'm holding, which I then demonstrate has happened. When you reset it do it casually so it is assumed that the cards go back together normally and you are ready to repeat.

As a mentalism effect the ID lacks something to me. When I do mentalism I like to do it in a body reading style simillar to Derren Brown, and having made a prediction before the performance doesn't wash well with me. I suppose you could go the route of saying that you have predicted the card based on the personality of the person you are performing for but I would never suggest that I did it much earlier before I knew who I would be performing for.

Cogito, ergo sum.
Cogito sumere potum alterum.

The ID can be used as a mentalism device, and repeated. It just depends on your approach to the deck and the effect, I guess.

I have covered my opinions on this here:

Take a look, I think you will find it helpful.

Siege

I would also be interested..

I'm just waiting for my deck to arrive from emagic and any help or suggestions for variations etc.. would be great. The more variations the better really.. or am I talking nonsense.. (I haven't used one before)

Thanks

Ok..

I have now got my pack and after spending most of the weekend familiarising myself with the pack I am now stuck on the final fanning..

Could someone please give me tips on how to do the fan part (I can fan them but I can't get the spectatros card to.. well you know).. Which fingers or techniques are best to get this to happen..

Thanks

Slippery

It's a subtle move - and the way I think most people do it is to discretely hold the 'chosen' card beneath the deck with the pads of the left middle and ring finger, and on top with the right thumb. Relax your grip, continue the fan with the right thumb, and miraculously...

A tip here is to outjog the card and carry on fanning - to show the rest of the deck... I have seen this trick done so many times where once the card is found, the effect is over.

Well this is really weird! She Who Must be Obeyed and I were away all last week having a totally underserved break and the Hotel we stayed at had evening cabaret. The featured performer on Wednesday evening was billed as a Comical Magician but nothing like Tommy Cooper. Oh what a great build up! In fat the guy's name was Mel Mellor (or Mellors, couldn't hear the intro all that well) and his act was fantastic - obviously well honed on the Hotel cabaret circuit and consisted of basic magic tricks interweaved with a lot of gentle fun-poking at the audience (I see the ladies are all wearing jewelry - so right of you not to wear the good stuff in this area). He selected one of the ladies (at least 70 years old as far as I could estimate!), asked her name, and did some jokey bits of patter with her. Right in the middle he did ID and his patter was along these lines:

I enjoy doing shows at these hotels as they always get me to arrive the day before and they give me a room free of charge. Mind you, I never sleep all that well, I was awake until four am this morning and, to while away the time, I just did a few card tricks for my own enjoyment but I left the deck (produces deck and tables it) with one card reversed. He then looked at his previously selected lady - 70 year old Gladys or whatever - and said, Gladys, I bet you can't guess which card is reversed. Go on, have a guess. Gladys thought a while and said The King of Hearts. Oh dear, said Mel (opens card box and riffles through deck), the only way for anyone other than me to know which card was actually reversed was for them to be to be in my room at 4am this morning (lots of Kenneth Williams type innuendo and face pulling at this point). Now you know you weren't in my room and I know you weren't in my room but (produces the reversed KH) will anyone else believe us?

It went over extremely well and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing even though it was a regular sized deck and it was in a cabaret area - Mel just took the single card to Gladys and her immediate cronies who confirmed the card was the right one.

That's a lovely little routine. And a very comedic usage of the ID.

That's why magic UTILITY items should be explored. The ID is a perfect base for the creation of loads of effects.

Or, was it simply the fact that she WAS in his room, the dirty old moo...

Hmmmmmmm...

Well, Gladys laughed so much that her top dentures almost fell out. :D

As you say, a great lesson in how good it is to sometimes ignore the established methods of 'doing the trick' and personalising everything. The words, ' I did it my way' should be on every magician's wall as a reminder. (But they don't have to sing it if it's Karaoke night, OK?)

Brilliant :)
It has been said already but this shows that self workers not only leave room for performance but also that this room should be taken as it adds an experience to effect rather than just name a card, well done yeah etc.

A great little description that we can all learn from I think :)
