Mog......

They are supposed to look that way.......to keep the cost of minting the coins down, the US....use a plating process with silver to turn them silver, but most have a copper core wich is cheeper that pure silver!

If I understand the review then it uses a gaffed US coin. I live in Canada and if I did a trick using a US quarter I'm sure people would be suspicious (and US coins circulate freely in Canada). I would guess that using a US coin in the UK would be an immediate tip-off that something is fixed.

Am I on the wrong track here? If so, I would appreciate some feedback because my bag of tricks could do with a few more coin tricks.

scotch and soda

Postby toastinc » Jan 23rd, '06, 00:44

a company named Johnson magic produces scotch and soda in euro, british, and american currency. themagicwarehouse.com and penguinmagic.com both carry them.
the quality is excellent.

Scotch and Soda has become a mini classic of magic, and yes it uses a US coin and a Mexican coin, but for goodness sake don't let that put you off. This isn't an impromptu trick and was never intended to be one. Lets face it you were never going to ask to borrow the Mexican coin even if you live in th US. We are Magicians and as such we use coins because the are bigger and more visible. It's as simple as that. I don't do much coin work myself but my friends that do use half dollars anyway (I'm in the UK btw), just because they can be seen more visibly, especially for a matrix or a Coins across routine.

So don't let the currency put you off.

For something ike cig thru coin, where it IS impromptu and you should ask to borrow the coin first, then yes of course it should be in currency, but not for this.

MagicDiscoMan had it right when he said...

so i painted them green and drew a stick man on one face, now the kids as well as the adults follow the action.

Great magical thinking.

Postby rusty » Feb 14th, '06, 03:19

Hi all.

I'm not sure what's goin on...the instructions say to use a US quarter

but it totally doesn't work??? no room at all to work with...I pop the

shell and see space but the US quarter won't fit..neither will the canadian?

I guess I'm gonna call the magic shop...cheese!

scotch and soda

I have the American set (as an American) and have been doing this for yonks (that's British init?).

I like to make the Mexican coin vanish and reappaer under my watch. I tell the punters that this is fastest coin trick in the world. Introduce the coins and make a joke about the US (half dollar) dominating Mexico (20 centavo), and then tell them to 'watch' the magic. If they 'watch' close enough, they will see that the 20 centavo reappears under my watch.

And the same can be said about a lot of magic effects.

The fact that you didn't spot the secret with whatever inside knowledge you have of magic and it's workings, will mean that others also won't spot the secret.

If you really aspire to being the next Chris Angel or David Blaine then you will need far far more than just card skills.

I recommend that you stop looking for free tricks etc. on the internet and invest in some good books on magic and performance.

There should be a key with the words 'Caps Lock' on it next to the letter 'A' on your keyboard. If you feel so inclined, you could give it a quick press and see what happens. It might actually encourage people to reply with a little less sarcasm.

Regarding you spending money on magic; good. So you should. However, your level of skill really does not depend on the amount of money you spend, rather the time you invest practicing.

Also, again about your postings, but there is a little edit button by all your posts. If nobody else has replied, it is encouraged that you use that button and edit your original message rather than posting a new one. You may wish to spend a little time reading through the forum rules and post an introduction in the correct forum, allowing people to respond with a greater knowledge of your preferred area of magic, experience, etc.

Harry.
