Bad English

Postby Marvell » Jul 6th, '07, 09:56

I'm sick of it.

HBK wrote:i didnt get to read the name of dat deal..... can u spell it backwards

I know it sounds picky, but it does say in the stickies that we should attempt to use good English where possible. OK, some words are hard to spell, but how hard are capital letters, apostrophes, full stops and the words like "that" and "you".

TXT speak and overuse of slang is the bane of the Mod's life here at TM. Time and time again we make the point that if someone has something worthwhile to say then a certain amount of effort and preparation should be involved. A spell checker isn't hard to find and use - I use the one in Outlook and it catches most of my spelling errors. With the obvious exceptions of members who's first language isn’t English, I can’t see what the problem is - we wouldn't walk up to a person in the street and start talking meaningless gibberish so why do the same thing in writing here?

Latest version of firefox has a built in spell checker for html forms. Alternatively, google toolbar has spell checker for forms.

yh bt yr like not letin mi xpres miself like wot i do on da streets an hoo is u anyway sum kinda nazi wot ds it mata if i cant spel or rite like u fink i shud u suk

Yes, I hate it too. It is absolutely appalling (sp :D ) how illiterate some of the kids who post on here are. I only hope they do it to appear cool and "street". My great fear is that they don't actually know how to write properly. That would be really frightening.

I would say that there will always be misspelling and typos which are generally ok and acceptable, especially from or foreign friends.

But I agree that this text talk is a pain in the *rse. I get constant texts from my wee sister saying "hey bro wotz happenin? did u get ma last txt bout dat fing? u doin anyfing dis wkend"

I can't stand it, takes me 3 times as long to read the bloody thing. I'd love to tell all them 'street' magicians were to stick there text talk and limited edition old skool ghost deckz. :D

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

It's representitve of the 'adult baby' culture we live in which comes from across the pond. Grown adults gorge themselves on child-like comfort food (McDonald's etc) watch (and get exited about) kids films and tv shows (The Simpsons, Spiderman 3, etc) and talk in baby gibberish.

I hate it when people break down words like a baby. Ie hospital becomes 'os-pee-tal'

Awful

What I hate the most is adults who dress like teenagers. I see dads with their 12 year old sons and they're both dressed the same in designer sportswear, trainers, and baseball caps. If you're a parent at least have the decency to act like a parent and stop pretending that you're still cool and hip. You're not. You're an old fart. Dress accordingly.

I speak as a father of two.

Since they are unlikely to be used in any other context, maybe certain txt words, street speak and words that should really be spelt correctly should join the swear words on the banned words list.

It's unlikely that anyone will be talking about DAT tapes, for instance.

If I were PM I introduce some very stringent elocution lessons into the school curriculum.
How menacing would a gang of chavs be if they spoke like Noel Coward or Kenneth Williams?

It annoys me that everybody seems to pin TXT Talk to trying to be "hip" or "cool" or "with it" It really isn't. People of all age talk like that through MSN and TXTing. It's just easier, once you get used to it.

I agree, on a forum as sophisticated as this it shouldn't be allowed, and it is very annoying :?

But what's more annoying is the amount of people that sign up per week, spelling in TXT and asking how to do effects. That DOES my NUT in!

Older people dressed in trackies doesn't really bother myself :? it's the culture of today.

I watch old films and see all these swingin' hippies and I think, you havin' a laugh? But a lot of the oldies on here probably loved dressing like that :P

Personally I miss all the mods & rockers & hippies & punks & goths & rockabillies etc. etc. Young folk in ye olden times used to put so much effort and thought into what they wore. These days (with a few rare exceptions) it seems that sports casual wear or a hoodie is as exciting as it gets. What happened?

Here's a great example of text speak and bad spelling!

Oh and animation.....

Personally I found this video hilarious! But I agree it's annoying on forums. Half of the time I don't understand what it means
