A late addendum by Gareth Witty

Strip with Jon Thompson

From : http://www.bigblindmedia.com

Format : DVD (with a free Stripper Deck)

Price : £22.99

Overview: Now the Stripper deck does often get looked down on by many magicians, but one man has broken that stigmata. His name is Jon Thomson and has done a great job of redefining the stripper deck. With help from David Forrest and Owen Packard you will learn how to make the stripper deck a more practical and viable tool in card magic.

Review:

10 effects are taught called Formation Aces, Binary 101, Cardman Elektra, Programmed Deck, Find My Aces, Out of Sight (redux), Mental Man (si-stack), Sandwich This, Genuinely Drawn and One to Ten. Along with all the moves and fine points of handling the deck.

David Forrest demo's each of the effects along with Rachel Townsend (who has appeared in many of BBM productions! Poor girl, I have offered to stand in just to give her a break!). Then David and Owen teach the effects with with some great close up shots. The teaching is very well done and you can and will learn all you need to know Also you will find their banter to be great! These two really make the DVD fun to watch and learn from. (Guys, do a podcast please!)

The effects are very well put together and offer many great uses in card and mentalism areas of magic. Its a great mix of effects and will suit all levels of magic.

Now Jon mainly deals with the moves and sleights, but also teaches some “out of the box” stuff as well which could well open up your creative side. Again, he shows ALL the moves in great detail and I had no problems with what he was teaching.

Now Barry Mephisto uses a totally new way of teaching which has to been seen to be believed! Now here we see a pro at work. I hope we can see more of him soon

Good Points: Very detailed, lots of info and ideas, plus a free deck of stripper cards!

Bad Points: the 2 blue heads that distract the viewer and Owen could at least dress for the DVDs (wink)

Conclusion: It seems the quality of the BBM products is getting better and better! Its just really amazing and a testament to the production team and the stars themselves! So far I have not seen one bad DVD from the guys and they use great material and magicians!

A 9 out of 10 overall, this would suit beginners very well and also those who have a few years experience. Never rule out a prop, you never know what new things you could do with it!!!

firstly allow me apologise for suggesting that the original poster may have worked for BBM, it was a joke, but i have to admit that i am becoming more and more suspicious of sly online marketing.

Anyway, either as a show of faith, or more honestly cups, i bought this dvd. I definatly agree with the original review- this is GREAT.

The deck that came with the dvd is top quality and much better than the one you had as a kid. I like the way the tricks are taught, with a seperate section teaching you the sleight, then a trick wich makes use of the principle. I thought that perhaps there could have been a few more effects, but im sure that they can be found in jon thompson's book.

so i would say a big 8/10 for this, good stuff!

peace

I have two stripper decks, both Bicycle. One of them is better than the other in that the gimmick/gaff is much better made. Bit hard to explain without giving it away (although I'm sure most people must surely know about strippers by now!) but I'm hoping the free stripper deck that comes with this DVD is of the higher quality. Yes, this DVD is on my ever-expanding wish list.

The decks you have sound like shop cut ones. I've had some decidedly nasty ones. There's a scene that's been cut out of the DVD where we show just how bad these things can get.

The USPCC ones that come with the DVD are cut at the factory, sealed and are very, very subtle.

hi all,

really glad that the lovely folks at TALKMAGIC are digging STRIP! Mr Thompson has put some serious work into this beast, and it's nice to see it paying off.

just a quick note about BICYCLE's own STRIPPER DECKS! the USPCC produced decks are awesome. they are cut at the factory as the cards are made, so they are perfect. they are not hand cut. they are machine cut. plus they come in a sealed case. lovely.

you get a free USPCC manufactured deck with the STRIP DVD.

but if anyone wants to buy a replacement (or wants the deck but not the dvd!!), you can PM me or email sales@bigblindmedia.com and we'll hook you up!

Thanks for that. I no longer use my badly cut deck as it is so obvious, especially when looking at the backs of the cards. (And obvious not just to me - I can think of at least one occasion where a spectator has pulled me up on it).

I am overseas and I received this last week from Bigblindmedia in just less than a week, which is real fast from my experience with other online shops. Since my laptop DVD-Rom is broken, finally lastnite I had the chance to secretly watch the dvd 3am in the morning in my living room when everyone else in my house is sound asleep... just so i could keep the magical secrets from them :)

I give this 9/10 as well, very happy with it. I say it is also value for money, and highly recommend to those new to card magic and thinking about which gimmick deck to get. There are tons out there like the svengali, ID, brainwave etc, but I recommend this as the price give u everything you need to start with. And with the tricks taught, its good to keep you busy practising and performing to friends for a while.

Just one small complain from me, I find the video a bit dark.. just like 2wo faced dvd! But i guess that the way Owen likes it :P

I have been a happy customer of BBM product since the beginning, Thanks for it and keep it up! Just to let you BBM guys know all your dvds that I haven't own are on my wishlist, and i just need to eat less and save up!

p.s: i previously own a stripper deck and as i remember its with USPCC bike back as well, but i remember there was a wrapper outside that label it 'Daryl's Stripper Deck or Stripper Deck by Daryl', anyone know if this is the same stripper deck from the same factory as the one that came with the Strip DVD?

The USPCC factory cut ones are exactly the same as a normal Bike deck except for the seal on the flap, which is white not blue, and on the base of the case the logo and barcode are the other way around. Sometimes there's a sticker on the wrapper, but that comes off. Maybe Daryl had some made up by USPCC?

Yup - we all go over to feifei's house at 3am, to watch our latest DVD's; ID and Seige always say we should wake her, so she can watch with, but I'm generally of the idea that this would perhaps be a bad thing to do

the Stripper decks with the printed wrap around them are usually post USPCC gaffed. I have seen some reasonably gaffed where by a small gaff is put on 2 sides rather than a larger gaff on one side... but usually these are not so good.

the factory gaffed and packed stripper deck is (as has been said earlier) is far better. As Tomo says, they come in a clear celo wrap just like a normal deck of bikes and so although there are some "subtle differences" with the packing nothing that would tip off a spec.

the "stripper deck logo" is on the celo not the box so it comes off with the celo. some examples below, but i imagine most retailers has access to them, just check they are in fact the factory sealed version:

Hiya, Thanks Bobby and Tomo for the insight to Stripper deck. There's so much more to it than just a simple Stripper eh. You are spot on about the decks with printed wrap around them, i remember they come with the seal already broken, so seems to be post-gaffed, and you are right about small gaff on two side rather than large on one. So it seems the one i had was custom made by Daryl and marketed using his name.

The factory gaffed with seal and celo wrap around stripper will definately pass off as a genuine deck to normal spectators :)

Mandrake, I am very relieved to hear this! I thought I was the only one sneaking around at night trying to watch a dvd (a suited for All Age DVD!). And....... have my magic stuffs locked in a hardcase samsonite suitcase :P, but now with my props increasing, and more and more tempting DVDs out there, i think i need to look for a lockable wooden chest now (=^.^=)
