Trick You Always Carry With You

Postby JAlexBrown » Aug 6th, '07, 01:19

As a magician myself I know that we've all got at least one trick we've always got on us, no matter where we are or what we're doing. For me, I've always got my Svengali Deck and my TT. What items/tricks do you ALWAYS have on you, any why do you like the trick so much?

I never leave my post without a deck of cards to do Diplopia, Reset, PH Brakthrough, and Bizarre Twist. I also bring the Anything Deck and am always prepared for Interlace.

I must admit I feel a little uncomfortable with the idea of pulling out a deck of cards or something, like someone who's desperate to perform at any moment. Which is not to say I haven't done it or never do it!

But I prefer to stick to hidden items like a TT (not something I've yet put any work into though), impromptu items like coins, or propless things like that brilliant Derren Brown 'Invisible Deal'.

I always carry a pack of card, a sharpie and a small pack of blank paper ready to "drawn appart". I try to change the picture drawn each time and i use the blanks papers for predictions.

Altho my sharpie has become my favorite props and i would not feel "naked" with just that ! ;-)

I'd have to say that my mind is the most important thing to bring with me... sadly, at my age, I forget it every now and again... :?

I would certainly never carry a svengali deck with me. I have seen enough of them.

However for the last 47 years I have always carried the following every single day. I don't suppose there are 10 days in that period when I haven't carried a set of spot paddles in my left trouser pocket along with two copper coins and one silver coin. I also have a pair of small dice for the Dr Sacks routine which has suddenly become popular even though I have been doing the routine for 40 years or so. It ain't new to me.

In addition to the above I always carry in another pocket a regular deck of playing cards.

At one time decades ago I would go even further. I would never leave the house without a cigarette pull vanisher on me. Iwould also have a wallet with quite a few packet tricks. And I would always carry two decks of cards rather than one. Mainly for the Do as I Do trick which is quite a wonderful item.

I am not like other performers who only perform for money. I will ALWAYS perform if someone asks me whether paid or not. . In a weird way I feel it is my duty since it is what I took magic up for in the first place.

It is actually quite good for business too because if you are any good it can build your reputation and that can eventually translate into money.

I don't have anything I carry with me all the time, but I'll usually have a deck of cards somewhere. However if Kioku turns out to be as good as I hope it will be I might start carrying that around with me everywhere.

Like Craig, I find my mind (sometimes) is the most useful prop. With it I can do palm readings (and readings in general) and also any number of mind-reading stunts. Find an old scrap of paper and a pen, and off we go - psychic heaven!

Kolossal Killer in my everyday wallet - which currently happens to be a Stealth Assassin. And a couple of rubber bands in my coin purse for CMH.

I take just a TT and my brain. Sometimes, if I'm feeling in the mood, I take a deck of cards.

Frankly there are so many effects you can do with a little imagination that you should never be stuck.

Ranging from simple impromptu vanishes all the way to spur-of-the-moment 'yeah, I know an effect with a salt cellar' type stuff.

This is the reason why many people urge the reading of books, and learning of basic methods and principles. Especially so before going out and spending a fortune on one-trick-pony packet effects or DVDs.

Impromptu magic can make you a magician even in the most restricted situation.
