I suppose the clue's in the name of the DVD. I understood it to be some basic mental effects and it was one of my first DVD purchases after I got back into magic and, especially, mentalism.

For example, I really liked the ESP card effects, but you didn't.

I suspect I'd enjoy it less, were I to view it for the first time now.

I thought it was great. I learned a ton about muscle reading, and the interview/story telling at the end was fun.

I felt the interview bits were fluff and the muscle reading bits very superficial. Most of all though, I listed it because I never have and almost certainly never will use muscle reading.

Since originally posting this I realise that I was wrong in my initial assessment of the DVD. It does contain good information on muscle reading if that's what you want to do. However, I think the book is far better than the DVD.

With regards the Hummer floating card and Gone, they are still both utter trash.

For example, I really liked the ESP card effects, but you didn't.

Too many dealing and other convoluted means of showing a prediction that is basically a 1 in 5 shot anyway. Each to their own I suppose.
I was more annoyed at the lack of any original material on there. He seemed to think his presentations (which were nothing special) justified the inclusion.
And the playing card routine just took the p**s. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Well I for one liked Room 101. So there. Just takes a mild amount of guts and some performing ability. Loops are wonderful though take a bit of getting used to.

I've luckily avoided buying owt terrible but my mate once bought a ring on wand type trick which at one point in the routine required the spec to close their eyes. I kid you not. Absolutely pi**ed myself when I read the instructions and saw his face.

My main grudge against the effect is that major corners were cut with one of the props provided. If you use the prop given to you, then their is a glaring discrepency that stands out like a sore thumb. Apparently you can take it apart and change, I have tried with no luck, though I cant say I tried too hard. I have never performed the effect to anyone, for the reason mentioned above, so cant really comment on it apart from what I've mentioned, though I'm not a fan of the method (too messy).

kitaristi0 - I agree with you completely. I was shown Gone by a good friend of mine who was trying to talk me into getting the effect. It took one viewing of it to completely turn me off.

It is nowhere near the style of vanish that I am looking for. Perhaps good for some, but not for my tastes.

I also have to say that I was disapointed with my purchase of How to do Street Magic by Ellusionist. This dvd was put together with little to no street magic in mind. Many of the effects shown were done on table tops and such, just not what I was expecting at all with the title it has.

The Student: the only difference between 'street' and 'table' magic is often where it's performed. Blaine didn't do anything in his street specials that many other workers hadn't been doing in all sorts of performing situations for years.

AndyRegs: I know what you mean about one of the props, I've managed to get round it with some covering motions where necessary, cant say much more in public obviously. The method is a bit involved conceptually I agree but in my experience it plays well to laypeople and certainly looks clean enough, I have to admit though I haven't performed it a whole lot and certainly not in a paid scenario. I might give it a go and see how it gets on.

Having said that i totally dont buy from one certain online dealer because i've been stung a few times........a swami sharpie thing leaps to mind (didnt even work) ..........i think it was super sharpie.......it sounded great....simply was'nt

i really rather just receive a kicking and have my wallet taken

also.........hahaha years and years ago i bought a copper tube thing for cutting a ciggie in half and then restoring in good lord it was bad

I'd rather be completely honest so that other people aware of things that have annoyed me in the past, whether they listen is up to them but at least the warning is there.
Most magic dealers I have used have been excellent and provided a great service and if there have been any problems they have sorted it out and been apologetic.

Except for one. One who argues the toss and needs to learn what customer service is about rather than making them angry and frustrated about using them. This one was a particularly unpleasant person to deal with and I wished I had not used them or bought their tawdry own brand products.
It's ok coming across as the good guy on a forum, offering help but you have to back it up when on the phone.

My worst purchase, by far, is 'phoneomenon' by doug mackenzie. Complete wste of £20 and was back on ebay within 2 hours

mirage deck has to be mine havent used it once, i already had a svengali deck which i liked but thought that the mirage would be so much better but its not. Its awkward to use also i think mine was made pretty bad:(

I perform one effect with my mirage deck, and have to say that it was worth the money for that deck tenfold, to perform this effect.

I even let my mate examine the deck beforehand!

This effect, I don't believe you could do with a svengali, as easily as with this

i see, well i guess my main problem with the mirage is the fact that the cards seem hard to handle, if you see what i mean (i dont want to reveal much about what they exactly are) the one advantage i think it has over the svengali is the fact that it can be spread but to layman a simply riffle through the svengali is enough to show the cards to be all different. But i wont get into an arguement i remember a thread on here that turned quite nasty concerning the 2 decks
