All that and he never added Markdini is a decent mentalist. Actually if needs be when at a London meet up I wont do much or any I will just play around with Greedos magic box of mirth. And do a couple of sponge things, some coinage magic and the likes, but I just perfer mentalism.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Aah bless Marky, you know I could never hurt you..

Nah seriously I'm a bit more chipper now and feeling slightly embarrassed about my outburst. So again:

I Like Mentalism.

If You Want To Do Mentalism I Don't Mind.

I Don't Like Pretension.

Sums it up I think.

bronz, I know exactly where you were coming from in your original post.
I think your objections (as are mine) is with people learning or attempting to learn mentalism for the wrong reasons.

Those reasons being that is fashionable or seems "cool". It suits a certain type of personality. I have always been interested in psychology and hypnosis and always been a talkative person with an overactive imagination so it kind of suits me and people that I perform for accept it from me. I couldn't imagine, for instance, Dynamo pulling off some of the things that Derren Brown does.

That made my blood run cold. You can't turn mentalism on and off any more than you can turn card skills or big box illusion skills on and off. You have to give it proper resect and bl**dy well work at it like most things in life. Grrrrr  .

I'm one of the newbies who got attracted to mental stuff, but I avoid the pretentiousness that you guys like. I've been into magic for about as long as I.D. and almost half of that has been reading and trying to gain a solid understanding of Luke Jermay and Kenton Knepper's works.

When I got 7 Deceptions, at first I didn't really 'get' it. I tried RGM with a minimal understanding of the how and why of it. Needless to say, I fell flat on my face. Reading, rereading, and taking notes (right in the margins of the book- I'm never going to sell it, so it doesn't matter) led me to appreciate the material.

One thing that the newbie psychological pretentious performer kids need to understand is rapport and style. I found that I can gain rapport with people who know me, but aren't in any way close to me very easily. A simple, impossible coin trick does what Darwin Ortiz suggested to start with- it slows down the intellectual side of the spec's thinking. As long as I don't seem challenging or rude, rapport and suggestibility comes quickly after the first coin trick.
My impromptu style is that of a freaky, obsessive kid who has odd bodily functions. I can (without any trickery) turn my arm 360 degrees and visibly pull it out of my shoulder socket. For Andruzzi fits right in context of such a kid. Once the freakiness is strongly established, I can push my way into more interesting effects. For example, I got Twisted Palm to work for me today.

That's one of the problems with 13 year old 'mentalists'; they're out of context. 13 year old kids aren't psychics or psychologists. They can be freaky though, so if they can place themselves in a character that fits them- and still do suggestion work without being fake- more power to them.
This doesn't exactly fit in with everything, but I think it's something interesting. After gaining rapport, creating a consensus that's positive is a key part of getting Jermay stuff to work well. I'm not sure how I got this to happen, but I did once, and everything was great.

I'm rambling now, so I'll just stop here.

I am thinking of having a disclaimer before I perform anything. "What you are about to see does not use NLP in any way. I use a mixture of psychic powers and intuition to give the ellusion of NLP for entertainment purposes only."

I actually work in education in a social sciences faculty, so to understand not only how people think, but also how they interact and behave in certain situations is a relevant area for me to use. Having said that I really do hate NLP, and wont even try to pretend that I'm using it. I've seen too many NLP zombies thinking they are 'gaining rapport' and instead making everyone think they are a bit strange.

What I do find sometimes, is that when people find out I teach, and I mention psychology, they often retort "ooh your not going to read my mind are you?"..."well as a matter of fact..."

When I show people things however, I have experimented with giving the impression that I'm not completely sure about how I do it. I cant really explain the process in words (I cant fully explain it here either funnily enough). I figure that if you could do these things, then that is exactly how it would be. This allows people to make their own mind up, and avoids any need for a disclaimer.
