The Beginner's Guide to... Voodoo

Postby Tomo » Oct 18th, '07, 10:55

Tonight, Channel 4, 11pm. It sounded interesting until I discovered that it's presented by... wait for it...

Preston from The Ordinary Boys.

Seriously!

Quote from Times online.

The Beginner’s Guide to Voodoo continues this abysmal series that shows Channel 4 at its considerable worst. It is desperately and pathetically striving to appeal to a youth audience by getting minor celebrities to stumble their way through subjects that demand more considered treatment. Tonight, Preston, of the Ordinary Boys and Celebirty Big Brother fame, who is interested in Voodoo because he fancies “a bit of spirit action” and because he wants voodoo to solve all his problems. You will learn nothing about Voodoo, but a great deal about the shallowness of contemporary pop culture.

Can you hear that sound? It's the bottom of the barrel being scraped.....

[rant] TV in the UK is in a bad state, the dear old Beeb are claiming that jobs need to be cut because they didn't get a high enough increase in the licence fee. In other words, they've spent the money before being sure of getting it which is great financial management - not. In recent years they've closed some of their studios so they don't have the expense of running them, sales of DVDs and merchandising based on BBC programmes (which we finance via the licence fee) are at an all time high, the income from repeats (with the notable exception of the Paul Daniels Shows!) via Satellite and Cable channel subscriptions must be a nice little earner and they still don't have enough cash? Un flaming believable. Perhaps they could save a few quid by only having one newsreader rather than two and similar economy measures.

ITV seem to think that night time programmes need only be phone in 'quiz' efforts with mimimal chance of anyone actually winning any cash, they're in deep doo-doo over the premium rate phone line scams, GM-TV ditto and yet they still find the cash to send the weather forecasters to remote parts of the UK to tell us what the weather is going to be like that day. As if the location and scenery in the background makes any difference? And as for the amount of 'reality', and 'celeb' shows, just don't get me started on that topic...... [/rant]

Did anyone see him storm off Never Mind The Buzzcocks? Okay, he was massively provoked, but what did he expect? It's a show predicated on taking the p*ss.

Correct me if I'm wrong:

By the very fact this is being debated, and talked about on an internet forum, people who otherwise wouldn't have seen it will tune in. They may even tell their friends and family, who will also tune in.

During the show, you'll see adverts—perhaps one of the people who wouldn't have otherwise seen the show will act upon the marketing in that advert?

And after the show, tongues will wag, interest will be generated.

In marketing terms, this is basically a way to get 'bums on seats'... rake in the viewers.

And guess what... no matter how much you think this is wrong, a load of poo or just exploit, you're MAKING it popular by talking about it. You're making it TOPICAL.

Viral advertising. Works like a charm.

You're just playing into their hands mwhuuuhahahahhahahaha

I won't be watching. I would have done, but I won't now. Maybe if the presenter was someone genuinely interested in Voodoo, but not some faded lock-stock-geezer-bloke who fancies “a bit of spirit action”. There's a repeat of an episode of series C of the excellent QI on another channel. That's where I'll be.

I have to say, my interest in this faded rapidly after I found out who 'preston' was... I am not really a fashionable bloke at all, and the 'modern' pop scene fills me with a sense of exploitation.

I Googled 'preston ordinary boys' and was shocked to find that he's not a member of some underground bizarre majick scene or somesuch, but a rather snotty nicotine-stained young plumb who's previous scrapes with voodoo were probably watching Live and Let Die when he was a nipper.

It's a sad thing, it really is.

Amazingly perceptive, ain't I  ?!

I swear I didn't see the news until a few minutes ago and, coupled with the hoo-hah at ITV and the reminder of the Channel 5 dial in scams, there's no doubt the great UK public have been taken to the cleaners, deliberately and mercilessly. Phrases such as, 'error of judgement' "serious cultural failure" and so on are just baloney. The first time it was realised that the public were being conned should have been the last but it kept on happening over a period of years so there was clearly deliberate deception with a view to ripping off anyone who phoned in to vote. OK, the viewers would know the cost of such calls and it was their decision to do so but not on the basis of their votes being disregarded for any reason. And for Blue Peter to be guilty of misleading the viewers, whatever would Auntie Val say?

As for 'Preston' - it's oop North isn't it? I didn't realise that Voodoo was so prevalent there, Lytham St.Annes certainly, but not Preston.... .

I'm surprised that people actually think they stand a statistically significant chance of winning a phone-in competition in the first place!

Personally, I'd love to see Jade Goodie investigate neo-paganism.
