Thanks guys! Those are the exact answers i wanted to hear! You just cost me £830! Which brings me to another point... why are macs so expensive compared to pc's?

Now, that's an easy one...

Your average PC is a frankenstein's monster of components... usually cheap. Strung together in any particular order.

Then, Microsoft supplies an OS which attempts to harmonise the existence of this mishmash.

The result? Well, not quite what we'd call integration—shoved into whatever sort of case you 'choose' with usually a shelf life of a couple of years. Coupled with viruses, hardware conflicts, software driver nonsens, and the dreaded REGISTRY!!!!

Not much of a 'Personal Computer'. In Mac land, PC means "Pile of C***" (Rhyming slang: Pony & Trap)

On the other hand...
With a Mac, you get a bit more care and attention... each component, software kernel and solder joint is designed by Apple's tech-heads... bringing it all together in unison.

Dearer, bespoke motherboards. Cases which don't only look good, but are DESIGNED to cool the internal components. SIMPLE expansion—usually with no worries about screws or heatsinks.

Everything that makes your Mac is carefully matched with everything else.

Coupled with ground-breaking design and massive quality standards.

Oh, and not to mention: when something goes wrong, there's only one place to look: Apple.

Possibly why Apple now is now the most valuable computer manufacturer in the world—overtaking IBM. http://www.macworld.co.uk/business/news ... llchandate

It's an exclusive membership to get an Apple. Once you're in, you're hooked. And all you need is to spend a few extra £££sss.

But, it's an INVESTMENT, not an EXPENSE...

1. No virus worries
2. Long working life
3. No-bulls**t specs (yes, a 1Ghz Mac can STILL outrun a 3Ghz PC)
4. Loveability... you will become more productive by WANTING to work with your Mac

etc.

etc.

Now... someone with more experience in computers (29 years or more will suffice) is invited to come on here and tell me "how many maths gigaflops a PC's FPU can do in a millisecond compared to the insignifcant Mac"... and I will throw this back at you...

In 29 years of using computers, ranging all the way from a 1k machine, I still am yet to find an all-rounder which surpasses the Mac. In REAL WORLD results, a Mac is FASTER... perhaps not on PAPER... but USING ONE is faster because you don't waste time with all the problems, errors and mess that a PC brings.

End of.

Still the Classic for me. I just the new 160Gb model. I just couldn't cope with only 16Gb for the touch... no matter how cool it looks.

I have an Classic Black 80 GB, as my 30 gig was stolen. :( I didn't get the touch because a)It wouldn't have been able to have all my stuff, especially because it probably comes with a couple GB used already, for the apps. and b)my mom didn't want me to have the "internet in my pocket" Understandable.

You've not done your homework on Leopard! Time machine is much more than a cool look for external hard drives, it's closer to the Holy Grail of backup utilities... and no, you don't need an external... just a partition.

I've done my homework! I understand it's more than a cool look, I just don't usually need to back things up. I know there's some way to have the files automatically go to a computer on your network. Can anyone help me out with that? Unless it's easy. I'll find out in 1 hour and 36 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

seige wrote:3. And if someone sends me a file from a windows office program, and I have the apple mac version of the program, will I still be able to read it?
Well, Apples' iWork costs about £60, and will open any† Microsoft office document.
Failing that, there's NeoOffice, which is free, and rocks.
Both iWork and NeoOffice compared to MS Office are like comparing the Space Shuttle with a paper aeroplane... †

I'm just having a seige quoting post arent I!!!

Now you're the one whos not done their homework! But I'm sure you have, and I'm mistaken. I thought that the quoted was going to buy a new Mac. If so, then he will get iWork with it, along with iLife and the current OS. If I've made a mistake, please correct me!

Now, non quoting anyone. In 1 hour and 30 minutes I will have Leopard. Can't wait. For those of you who have looked into Leopard, what's your favorite part about it?

Actually iWork is only available as a 30 day trial on a new mac. But still, £55 for the full program is hardly worth arguing over!

Dini's first computer was wait for it......a C16 plus 4 and a vic 20 then I got myself an amiga 500+ and most games wouldnt work on it. Then I got a CD32 with the box of trciks you put in the back that let you plug in a keyboard, floppy drive and a mouse.

Yep, you DID make a mistake, I HAD done my homework... ;)

You get the trial, as stated. But for a pittance, you'll be doing more with MS stuff than the MS office suite for Mac let's you do!

Now... as for Time Machine... it's FAR more than backups. It's MUCH more than making sure your files are duped.
It's a graphical user interface into your computer's history...
For example, remember that email you deleted two months ago with your mate's new mobile number on? Damn... wouldn't it be great to go back in time, have a look and jot down the number, and then come back?
Yep... that's Time Machine.
And, imagine... you took a load of pics of your sisters' new baby. Once-in-a-lifetime images. Downloaded them to the computer, erased the camera card. A few mates came round and you showed them how cool your computer is for warping faces—and making your sister's new kid look like an alien!
Oooops! You didn't mean to SAVE IT!!! Oh dear...
But it's a good job you have Time Machine.

You see... what Apple have done with Time Machine isn't groundbreaking... 'rewind' and 'revert' software has been around for ages. But... what IS groundbreaking is the way it's implemented.

Take a look... like I said, it's MUCH more than backup. And I wouldn't recommend network. Get a cheap USB2 hard drive. 500Gb will set you back around £65.

Now, I am running Leopard perfectly from a brand new install on a fresh HD. And I must say, it's blowing my socks off at every corner.

I've worked on Macs exclusively—every day, in fact (well, working days!)—since 1991. And this is possibly the most 'hairs on back of neck' experience I had since I got my first iPod.

One VERY happy Apple customer here.

alright, I've sorted out most things that have been a little glitchy with Leopard. My friend and I were on the phone with an Apple Support guy for about 2 and a half hours. While we're here, can someone PM me with details about transferring files from one computer to another? It's a lot of stuff, and bluetooth isn't transferring the music. I only ask because my friend just got a new MacBook, and is trying to transfer everything from his iBook. Thanks for the help :D

Nobody ever needs to back things up until their hard drive breaks ;)
If it has the ability to back up to a network, that would be very cool.

Now, does anyone fancy giving me a new iMac as a present? :p

I personally like using my MacBook more than an iMac. I'll give you a MacBook! 8)

Wow, after working with leopard for a little while, and getting to know everything, I really love this operating system!

I got a shiny new aluminium iMac about a month or so ago and I don't think I could go back to a windows system now! It's so quiet that I can't quite believe how loud my old computer was, it works so well that I can't believe I just put up with my old computer for so long and the OS is so nice to use that I get more stuff done than before just because none of it is a hassle anymore!!
I upgraded to leopard a week ago..well..6 days. I'd say its very similar to Tiger in use but then, Tiger was already awesome! The new features are the sort of thing you don't need until you've used them once because after that you can't really live without them.

1)Time Machine is so simple to use and works seamlessly.

2)Stacks mean you can have the folders you use most right there in the dock. I expected to be able to select a few files and applications then form a stack but in reality stacks are just a really neat, useable way of displaying folders. To get around that, I've made folders containing shortcuts to groups of applications I use (iLife, iWork, etc. etc.) instead of having all my applications in one stack.

3)The new finder makes finding things way easier and I haven't had to run quicktime, pages or many other apps since installing Leopard because "quicklook" means its easier just to tap spacebar and have it loaded instantly.

4)I'd say it "out pretties" Vista.

5)Spaces are convenient and mean you can reduce clutter on your desktop without having to close or minimize windows. I've used a similar feature in Ubuntu Linux running Beryl but Leopard does the job equally as well.

6)I don't know... It's just generally good. Apart from the iSight backdrop thing which works well only if conditions are perfect... but meh.

My friend was persuaded to get a mac after using mine for just 5 minutes. If anyones thinking of buying one, I'd go for it. You probably wont be disappointed.
