I think most people here will totally agree with you there. You can get so much more from a good book than you can from a one shot DVD. Although there are some very good DVDs out there too and some people do find it easier to learn from a DVD than a book.

Sure, but you still have to learn from someone, right?

...Unless you're some smart guy making up your own tricks, that is. :)

I have one book with 75 PAGES of GOOD card tricks. It will keep me going for ages.... To buy DVD after DVD to learn a few tricks can be expensive but rather buy one good book or DVD that features enough tricks to keep you going for ages...

In defense of the old DVD's I thought I'd throw myself on the preverbial grenade and so taking one for the team.
Although I agree that learning from books is both cheaper and probably more fulfilling as it feels like you are discovering an effect for yourself. I must admit though that I find learning an effect from a book a bit frustrating, having to read the same passage over and over to get a grasp of what needs to happen in order to pull off the effect.
With DVD's I pretty much get the jist straight away as it is presented to me and thus am able to learn things far quicker. Obviously quicker isn't always better as you can be tempted to move on before you have perfected it.
I also find the dvds (on the whole) entertaining but have rarely enjoyed reading what basically constitutes a book of instructions. I have enjoyed the result obviously.

Finally I'd like to say that I learn from both books and dvd's. With books you get more for your money and far more choice but personally if given the choice I would opt for dvd's anyday apart frommagic theory books such as 'Strong Magic' which I really enjoy.

If card tricks is your thing, then you could do a lot worse than Annemann's Card Magic by Ted Annemann. This little book contains a number of gems, including a superb torn and restored effect that utilises flash paper. I perform it often and it goes down a treat.

Obviously not every single trick is good, but like many of the old Dover publications, it represents great value for money and you will certainly use a few of the effects.

Sorry folks but this thread is now locked. There's nothing amiss with the content but I've had far too many PMs asking why we aren’t doing something about the excessive use of punctuation marks in this and similar posts. Just taking the titles for a moment we get:

LOOOOL BACK IN TIME best trick ever?????????
HOW FUNNY is this JOKE??? hahahahaha
Flushtration Count do LAYMEN pick up on it???????
Miracle Routine!!!
PALMING a card DURING ElMSLEY count POSSIBLE????????
VERNON was agains any type of fancy card stuff!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOO i CAN DOOOOOO PERFECT FARO'S NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SOOO wat kinf pf card do people in AUSTRALIA use?????
Re: Why no info on ARTHUR BUCKLEY??????

The text in those posts contain a lot more plus a lack of proper punctuation, lack of capitalised letters, continual spelling errors which a basic spell checker would find and correct, and use of TXT speak. I was hoping to let all this carry on in the hope that it was just enthusiasm but I have to agree that it's now reached the stage where it's just plain annoying. Any future posts like this will be deleted without further comment so can we please see a change to properly laid out and thoughtful messages? TM has a good reputation and that needs to be respected far more than we're seeing at the moment.
