Although I agree that learning from books is both cheaper and probably more fulfilling as it feels like you are discovering an effect for yourself. I must admit though that I find learning an effect from a book a bit frustrating, having to read the same passage over and over to get a grasp of what needs to happen in order to pull off the effect.
With DVD's I pretty much get the jist straight away as it is presented to me and thus am able to learn things far quicker. Obviously quicker isn't always better as you can be tempted to move on before you have perfected it.
I also find the dvds (on the whole) entertaining but have rarely enjoyed reading what basically constitutes a book of instructions. I have enjoyed the result obviously.
Finally I'd like to say that I learn from both books and dvd's. With books you get more for your money and far more choice but personally if given the choice I would opt for dvd's anyday apart frommagic theory books such as 'Strong Magic' which I really enjoy.
