Data gathering gone mad....

Postby Mandrake » Nov 21st, '07, 12:35

Not quite on the same topic as the data lost in the post thread but I found this to be typical in terms of data gathering gone mad.

My next door neighbour is applying for a free bus pass and showed me the form. Apart from the obvious essential name, address and proof of age details, he has to tick boxes to indicate his ethnic background, Black, White, Chinese, English, Irish and so on. As he phrased it, does my ethnic background make any #@&%$* difference to how I get on the bus or where I sit? Good question.

It's probably so that some nosey parker can see whether the bus service "fits the needs of the community", or some such meaningless phrase.

Or to keep some divvy in a pointless job which doesn't need to be done but avoids them going on the unemployment figures.....

Actually, I might just drop our local Councillor a line and ask if he knows why and the purposes to which that data is put. He likes stirring things!!

Tee hee. You old anarchist, you. They want far too much irrelevant information about us these days. An answer of "it's to help you" isn't good enough.

I vote he :
a) puts down an ethic background and / or religious status that doesnt exist

or b) puts down an ethic background obviously at complete odds with his photo just to see if anyone notices

Apparently he's going to tick the box marked 'Other' and fill in Klingon. It's a legitimate grouping so let them argue that one!!!

They probably already employ a Klingon translator, doubtless he'll receive another form through the post all written in Klingon just for him.

 That'd teach him to be smart-arse!

Reminds of that Simpsons episode when someone's joining the army...

"What's this question? "Are you a ho-mo-sex..."
"Er, you're not obliged to answer that section any more..."

I've actually filled in an application form, where the equal oppurtunities part asked what my sexual orientation was. And no, it wasn't scribbled out :p
