Love everything mentioned, but to narrow it down...my personal view is that we have a particular favoritism toward the best that was around when it was new to us; in my case, that means Royal Road, ECT, EatCT, etc., as previously mentioned.
As I sit here in late 2007, though, I honestly feel that if you're just starting out, and you can't get EVERYTHING, at least right away, the best you can do is Card College. This makes sense; Roberto Giobbi had the opportunity to "stand on the shoulders of giants," as they say, and he rose to the occasion. Granted, Royal Road isn't particularly expensive, and nobody should really be without it, but if I were planning an up & coming card man's library, Volume by Volume, it would be CC 1, CC 2, CC 3, CC 4, CC 5...and then I'd get back to thinking about it when we had to figure out what his 6th book would be.
