Maybe I should have posted this in the review requests.................

For a beginner, which it the better choice, 13 steps to mentalism or practical mind reading? I'm sure they are both good, but I don't want to get the two of them at one go.

I've seen the reviews on the books, but could somebody please tell me which one of them is the most beneficial.
(And of course there are other books on the topic, but I don't want to undo myself with too many choices!)

13 Steps is in my humble opinion far superior to PMM. If you only ever buy one book on mentalism, make it 13 steps.

Seconded. The layout is more systematic, it's fully indexed and it covers a wider range of techniques and also business advice.

No index is something I don't like about Dover books in general. They're great, but they really need indexing.

I think the fault is with the books they are republishing, rather than with Dover themselves. In fact, Magic and Showmanship by Henning Nelms, which is a Dover original (and which I can strongly recommend for mentalists), has two indexes.

For a complete beginner I think I second the Karl Fulves recommendation. Once you get into things then I would go for the Corinda book. For one thing you get more advice about presentation there. The Anneman book is great but when all is said and done it is just a bunch of tricks.

True, but there are some very useful techniques buried in those tricks which you can pull out and use. It's just not so as easy to find them as it is in Corinda.

Don't overlook the Handbook of Mental Magic by Martin Kaye. It is surprisingly informative covering all phases of mentalism including presenttion and theory.

I had forgotten about Marvin Kaye's book. It is not bad at all. I think mentalists generally don't like it because of the attitude that Mr Kaye displays to people who try to come across as the real thing. A lot of purists would be irritated by his book.
