I went to Bookers last week and they do a styrafoam cup, like a mushy peas cup, which is about the same height as the cups that come with the Scorpian but which have a bigger diameter. I bought a pack of 50 for around £3.50. I have not used them in anger yet but have checked them out and they are OK.

How close do people pass their hands over the cup to "feel the force"? I find that I need to be pretty close and sometimes need to go down the side of the cup depending which way the beastie is pointing.

I usually run my hand about 3-4 inches above the cups and all is ok. I have tried using larger cups and it's only in this instance that I need to run my hands down the side of each one. (I have seen this done of demos for Spike but with the irght size cups not necessary for Scorpion).

I'll have to check whether there is a Bookers near me or not. Thanks for the tip. I will try and check out Costco too. I thought most supermarkets such as Asda, Sainsburys etc would have them that size but alas no.

The Effect

http://outlaw-effects.com/outlaweffects ... &Itemid=38

The basic effect is quite simple. You place the scorpion on a table along with 4 little paper cups. Turn your back and tell the spec to cover the scorpion with one of the cups and place the other 3 cups in any positions to the left or right of the cup with the Scorpion under it.

One by one you crush each cup leaving the Scorpion untouched. Needs NO SET-UP needs NO-RESET!. You're always ready to go. Perfect for table hopping, walk around and parlour!

Cost

$80.00 including International Shipping ($75 Domestic)

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

1 or 2 depending on your ability

Review

Plenty of reviews on this baby already, but I'd like to give my opinions - firstly, I'll get the bad stuff out of the way - I ordered this on 22 November, and it didn't arrive until yesterday, which is quite a lengthy delivery time. When I e-mailed Roth just over a week before Christmas, he explained why, and advised that it had only just been dispatched. As a result, I wasn't able to perform this on Christmas Day as the finale to the show I was doing for family and friends, however, it was well worth the wait...

The Scorpion itself arrived well packaged, was slightly smaller than I expected, but looks suitably menacing, and for the price, the Scorpion, decorative box and instructions are top notch, and well worth the money. You also get a password to access the Scorpion owner's forum, which I'll check out when I get a chance.

I've got a routine worked out for this involving a set of rubber gloves, a pair of d'lites and some Dr John music, and I'm looking forward to performing it for the first time. I know it's going to be something I can rely on, and once I'm happy with the handling etc. I'll be able to show it to family and friends.

The instructions that come with the Scorpion are well written, and give you a nice bit of backstory that you can add to to create your own routine. If it wasn't for the slow delivery, this would be getting a 10, also, there's a certain special something that this doesn't come with (but you are NEVER misled about this, it is pointed out on the website description before you buy it), so 9/10 it is.

Overall

Excellent value for money, a very nice variation on smash & stab or russian roulette, and the Scorpion itself lends itself to a nice oriental backstory that can be as mystifying, terrifying or as funny as you care to make it. All in all, I would seriously recommend you get one if you haven't already.

I won't be using this in my act (somehow I don't think the kids would be too happy having it sandwiched between hippy hoppy rabbits and the magic colouring book), but I'll make sure that EVERY one of my family, friends (and their friends) have all seen it at least once. 9/10

Cups Review

Postby magikmax » Jan 22nd, '08, 10:41

Here's a review of some cups I have just received in the post, recommended on a previous link:

Biodegradable Disposable Cups Small from A Lot of Coffee:
http://www.alotofcoffee.co.uk/products/ ... mp;_More=1

You get 50 cups for £2.25 (plus about the same again in p&p)

the cups are the perfect size for the trick, about the same height as the Dixie cups you get with the scorpion, but quite a bit wider. The cups are also completely opeque, you won't be accused of seeing though them. Also, the magic works perfectly through them, so you're not going to puncture yourself with them.

The only slight problem is that they're very sturdy, so you will need a SOLID table to perform this on, because with the force you'll need to crush them, the other cups may jump a little if it's just a flimsy magic table. Any solid coffee table or such like would be fine though.

would recommend them
