The DONTS in spoon bending.

If you are into spoon bending and wanted to top off Steve Shaw or kick Morgan out of the Bellagio, this video would help your performance. It's simple: don't do it the way he does it. He looks like he's been doing it only for a week.

Yeah, even his very first line is wrong. Have he read any books on metalism?

Aside from that, all of those teachings of Steve Shaw went to waste. He did distract the ladies but the camera is still focused on him. That is the problem with videos. You can watch it over and over, and it cannot distract...unless you do the typical "out of cam shot" you usually see on the 40 year old Goth show. This dude doesn't need another preview, you can see it right away.

ID gone wrong. He's been doing magic for 32 years but he learned about ID yesterday.

What's with the "Mentalist can't do what magician's do" dialogue? That's completely stupid.

**For the ID link**

Why would someone "mess up" with the ID? Doesn't even make sense to me at least.... Very poorly done in my eyes.

The American reaction to EVERYTHING is "Oh..my..god!"

It's annoying, tiresome and cliched. Surely there are other ways in which to express yourself.

The Fist push down for the bend is a direct copy of Richard Osterlinds positioning for his bend.

If you want to top off steve shaw the handling needs to be cleaner and much fairer. I have his and Osterlinds videos and he has a very clean style that doesn't rely on extreme body gestures that distract for the actual sight of the spoon bending. Osterlind is a great performer but his style would be hard pressed in the environments that Shaw grew up performing in.

Just My two cents.

Trust me, I've seen noted names "Miss" witch the ID... it's not that hard to do nor "out of the ordinary"

The two guys in these videos are a classic example of Magicians trying to do mentalism but not understanding how to create mystery; they are simply doing a trick by wrote... exactly as the instructions said in the book on on the DVD or whatever. They are not the sort that invest time into refining an effect or creating a coherent sense of flow.

Now when it comes to "catching" someone make a bend, or whatever... it's not difficult for trained eyes to do. It is in our nature to see such things and critique them as a short coming. In truth, most any of us can be "caught" if someone if privy to the kind of material we are presenting and the more traditional methods by which such things are accomplished. Again, this is a common weakness that exists within our craft but not so much as in the mode of the performer as it is our role as observer; learning to step back and "forget" what we know long enough to see what this guy does through the laypersons perspective will make a major difference in how the demonstration is perceived. Though the first guy linked to need to polish his word & people management skills, he did a reasonably decent job. His biggest flaws readily correct by way of gaining more experience and LISTENING to the feedback given him by those that have a bit more "seasoning" for the sake of removing the rough spots. Frankly I think think guy could evolve into someone capable of delivering a decent program, he just needs some formal guidance at this stage in the game.

As to LordFreddie's observation on the "OMG" term...

AGREED!

Sadly, what passes as being an "education" in this country limits most of the past and present generation groups when it comes to the ability to properly express themselves under typical circumstances. The OMG mantra being used in reference to surprise and joy as well as dismay and ugliness... e.g. I'd say we need to start shooting so-called "educators" for every child they allow to fall into said rut.

I think people with spoon bending experience and similar will agree that misdirection is a key element. This very much the opinion of many people's fave metal bender Banachek. So watching a video of someone performing this effect when you know the technique makes it a little unfair to judge.

Imagine being filmed while doing your INV. Deck routine. If someone repeatedly watched over and over, eventually they would notice an irregularity in the cards you show (and dont show). However performed live in the right way, it is an absolute miracle.

If you are going to be filmed doing spoon bending, you really need to clue up the camera man about when is the right time to be on you, and when they need to be switching to the audience to get a "reaction" so you can do your business.

I agree with the audience management comment by Craig, any time you have to ask someone to "go stand over there next to her", you draw attention to the fact it may be "necessary" so you dont see "something". There are other ways of getting people to stand where you want without so obviously asking them.

Once, when I made an international phone call to an American friend, the response she gave when I announced my identity was "Oh my god!" - personally, I prefer to imagine that it was, "Oh, my god!"

I much prefer the expressions "Bloody Nora!" (as used by Jack Duckworth) and "Gordon Bennett!".
