Like anything else all your questions except the last depend upon your performance. I have a love hate relationship with IT. Yes the audience can see it if you are not careful. In the proper conditions and with the right background it is invisible. And it does work in most conditions and with most backgrounds. My background is usually my shirt so all is good.
You can get tangled up in it. There are all kinds of interesting devices to eliminate being tangled up. But you can still get tangled easily enough. Set ups are not impromptu and require thought and some serious routine managment.
As for books, I'm sure there are others on here that can recommend good books on thread. I basically started when it was new and just played with it. I really like....dang I can't say what I like without giving it away. Let's just say it is a floating cig routine but I replace the cig with other objects. I also do a thing with a candle. I place the spectators ring around the candle, call on the spirits and slowly...ever so slowly their ring starts to climb up the candle.
It is worth buying some, deciding for yourself and then if you decide you like it go for thread reels. Thread itself is cheap. Again just my opinion.
