If you can xxxxxx, then you can make the gimmick (surely) ???
Or am I missing something here?

I agree, I think many of the reviews are making too big a deal about the making of the gimmick. I know it will be different for everyone but at least I was surprised at how easy making the gimmick was compared to what some people were reporting in their reviews.

Edited for exposure.

How easy is it to setup and take down on a borrowed deck?

Set up is easy, cleaning up is relatively easy too and the DVD shows at least three different ways to do it.

hey I just realized something... you guys are talking about how the rising card works better w/ 5-6 cards removed...

In the dvd there is one part where Nathan actually says to the spectators something like "actually I will make it easier and just get rid of a few cards" and he throws them off to the side. I was confused at the time when I was watching this but now it makes sense!

I realize this thread is pretty much dead but just wanted to say something. After giving up awhile ago with this I have started to try and make them again....

The making of the gimmick is easy. I can make one in about 5-7 minutes however in order to make one that WORKS is not so easy. So far I have only got the card to rise about 1/2 of inch out of the box. It is driving me insane. It is so hard to figure out how big to make it... i really am starting to wonder if they even can be made to do the effect that is shown in the video!!

Great review! Box Monster is a fantastic effect. Nathan is one hell of a guy.. He's funny, entertaining, skilled, creative and another genuinely nice and helpful guy as well.

He was amazing as usual at Blackpool this year, what a year its been for him!

Box Monster is a beast. Obviously my fave part is the card "crawling" out of the spread but I have to admit I have a soft spot for his little minni-effect where the deck pops open. If I'm opening a deck of cards, that's what I am doing.

Great guy, great product. I really do urge people to watch the preview for Box Monster if they have not already. Also, brilliant quality DVD as usual from Ellusionist. They have some amazing effects and some poor ones, we all know that. But they always get the job done right in terms of production quality and Box Monster is one of the best ones. Nate is very easy to learn from.

Take it easy,

P.H.

* EDITED *

Upon constant research, I found that the gimmick would only last approximately 30 performances only. So refills are a must. There are some "kids" who didn't even went near to 20...but then, that's another story.

Please disregard my previous inquiry. Thanks.

After acquiring the product for two weeks now, let me give my own review for this. It's my first review here on the forums, please forgive me :)

Cost
$24.95 from Ellusionist. I think everybody is already familiar with their "price range". It's a good deal for me.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
It's a 1.

Difficulty in makng the "gimmick"
4. Yes, you need advanced sleight of hands :)

Review

Ellusionist gives you a DVD with good production quality, this is what I like about them (at least I have something to like!). Nathan Kranzo gives you four demonstrations of this effect infront of people. I am not really familiar with his work, but he's okay for me. Quite funny even.

The effect is easy to perform. The gimmick can be placed and removed easily as well. So the clean up process is easy. On my short experience, I wouldn't even need a clean up. I think this is really a good finisher for my card tricks so most of the time, I just put the pack away and leave them mesmerized.

The effect itself is very visual and powerful. My approach to this is really psychological. In a way, I am trying to convince the person that they DO have psychic ability and they just don't know how to harness/develop it well. I don't explain to them that the card will jump out of the pack...I just let them think of their card and it pops up. Expect the shock from most people :)

Creating the gimmick is really not that hard. I have to admit that many of your comments influenced me to think twice. I really believe that making the gimmick is the hardest thing in the world. I admit that the first time is hell. I suggest you improvise and think of ways on how to make things easier. I actually found a way although I find it irrelevant now since creating the gimmick for at least four times would greatly develop your skill in making one. So I really think it's not a BIG DEAL.

Overall

4/5. It's has a very strong visual effect and easy to perform as well. It's the Ellusionist product that I could recommend along with Sinful.

Will it last more than 30 presentations? I think it will. My current gimmick still does not break for more than 12 presentations...to think I have so many stuff left.

BTW...

Brad really did well in the production of his DVDs. As you can see, I also own Nathan's Guide to Loops (eeeek!) and it seems that everything was taped the same day. Nathan has the same outfit, they used the same set (I dont even think Nathan left his seat!), they also have the same audience on some scenes etc.
