I think I own a rare, expensive book on memory...

...called How to Develop a Perfect Memory by Dominic O'Brien. I just went searching for a second copy on Amazon and discovered they only have three secondhand copies for sale, starting at about £55; the other two copies are £70 each. (Apparently, it is now out of print and is difficult to find). Bearing in mind this is a paperback that I paid about £5 for several years ago, I was quite chuffed. I've searched for it on other websites that deal in rare, out of print books and the average price I'm getting is about £70 or US$140-150.

I can't even find a copy on eBay, which has got to be a first. My wife thinks I should sell it but I'm not sure. You see, even though I've had it for years, I've never actually read through it. I think I'm going to retrieve it from the attic tomorrow and read it. Then I'll decide whether or not to put it up for sale. Who knows, perhaps it's not as rare as I thought and won't be worth selling. Or I may like it so much I just decide to keep it regardless. I'm reading Derren Brown's Tricks of the Mind at the moment (bloody brilliant it is, too) and the chapter on memory is just fascinating.

Does anyone else own Dominic O'Brien's book? Surely it can't be that rare that it's selling for upwards of £50? I just find that hard to believe because the book is not that old.

I'm going on a bit now, so I'll stop. :)

Hi replicant.

Have a look at Biblion. I always use it. Highly recommended.

http://biblion.co.uk/

It links thousands of secondhand book sellers (and their catalogues) around the world.

It has only one listed, though that changes every day.
It's priced at 110 Euros second hand (sorry, can't do the Euro symbol) and it says:

"This book is long out of print and rather rare. It is also fairly widely praised as being the best modern method ever devised to memorize anything from facts and speeches to foreign languages. Dominic O'Brien is the eight times winner of the The World Memory Championships and has a number of entries in the Guinness Book of Records including the memorisation of 54 packs of shuffled cards after just a single-sighting of each card. "

So there you go. You do indeed have a rare book. Keep a hold of it!

:D

EDIT: Just wanted to add... The booksellers that this site links are 'serious' booksellers. Most are the types you find tucked away in little dusty shops down back alleys. Brilliant!

Thanks for the link, Marvo Marky. I'm not going to sell it (yet) as I want to actually read it and see what all the fuss is about!

I read a great book on memory. I just can't remember what the name was.

Somebody had to say it.
