The main difference being that D&D takes place in your mind, whereas 40K has a physical presence in the form of lead/plastic figures complete with scenery, vehicles and all manner of cool models. I think that's about right; someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure.

You're not wrong.

In RPGs, you don't need miniatures, but they come in handy to work out where everybody is (for things like falling into trapdoors, getting caught in explosions, etc.). Miniatures games like 'Warhammer' are arguably more closely related to wargames than RPGs.

This kind of thing was pretty much my life when I was in my teens, but I guess I grew out of it once I hit my twenties. It now holds no interest at all. Funny how things work out.

In ten years' time, you'll wonder why you have all those decks of cards!

Some of my sudents work for Games Workshop creating all that stuff. I had a friend that worked there and a few years ago he auctioned off some of his models to raise money for his autistic son to receive some treatment. He only got rid of a small portion of his collection and rasied over £13,000.

I've never got into it myself but i can't help but admire the way he paints them up etc. Really quite amazing. He gave me some original 40k manuals i never got to read, i must give them back to him as he said these ones were rare now or something.

Another friend who used to work for them (they made alot of staff redundant last year) has just gone into business making plastic versions of the models so the armies can be built at a fraction of the cost. he put alot of money into the molds etc and it seems to be really working for him.

Not likely! Magic is the only hobby I've ever had where I have not lost interest over the years; I started out with no money and a Svengali deck in my mid-teens and I'm still here nearly twenty years down the line (still with no money but slightly more than a Svengali deck....) :D

I play (or have played) most of the GW games systems. As for 40k, I play Orks and Eldar...two completely different approaches to warfare!

That's a coincidence Alpha Guy, I have Eldar as a main army and Orks that I got cheap from E-bay. The Orks are great fun to play, but Eldar seem really good... a bit weak, but some seriously good weapons compared to the other armys I've played (although I've only had a couple of games).

I love the look of the Dark Eldar, but the guy in the shop said they are tough to play, so that put me off!

Liam.
