Have you seen polter. A very simple but powerful effect to lead you into what you are trying to do. Whilst you build up your audience for the lights going out or tv switching on, something crashes onto the floor in the next room with no means of how it happened apart from you had too much force in the room. Simple gimmick that lets you move things in another room without you being there. Using it freaks people.
