Favourite early purchase...

Postby Jordan C » Aug 3rd, '08, 20:12

As in, what did you buy in the eraly days you still love and use?

For me, a cheap night out means using copious effects from Paul Xenons 100 ways to win a tenner.... And Heirloom following on from hopping halves. I have a standardised (ish) end to whatever I do and it usually involves after a bar effect from xenon such as three's up, I use hopp[ing halves then put it away saying that I got into magic through my nan (cue heirlooom.

I've said time and again I dont leave home without heirloom although I am betraying my own intention with this post as I bought that in about year 3 of being a student of the art!!

I'm still in the early years. 8) My favorite fun type thing that I still use is card sniff in Mac King's Trick with your head book. That was one of my first regular performed card tricks.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

One of my early favorites and still my favorite would have to be Trilogy, I've become quite attached to it and it will probably be in my mentalism routine for the rest of my magical life. Wheras alot of the effect's I have brought after that have come and gone and been forgotten about this still follow's me about like my shadow aww bless. I may even marry it one day

When I was about 10, I went to an eisteddfod (which is a Welsh traditional singing/dancing/recitation competition basically). And on the huge showground was a magic stall, and I bought a "pull" from there. Well, I didn't really use it for much to start with, but I still find myself 7 years later still putting it on and using for anything and everything I can think of. I never thought I'd still be using it now when I bought it all those years ago I can tell you :D

Two of the earliest 'real' tricks I got (back in the 80s I think) were Rainbow Cascade and Card Warp. My wife and I were travelling in SE Asia recently and I performed Card Warp for her one evening!

As a youngster in magic it became a standard joke in my family that they would chose the 3S for that was the 'value' of my Svengali deck!

I bought several things i use.

magic wise, the original impossible penetration, by Challet magic, ( before Viking took it over )

whats the difference between this , and the cheap one you can buy today?

the same dfference between a stradivarius, and any other violin.

the other item i use, is the chu visible die vanish, which my parents bought me one christmas, back in the days when Hamly's had a propper magic department. ( the box in the middle of this group)

i also use my tenyo what comes next, that i bought so many years ago. they knew how to make things then, because it looks as good today, as it looked when i bought it, at the age of.. 17. :)

My favorite early purchase is scotch & soda, close second a stripper deck, however i dont tend to use them any more.

My favorite early purchase I still use is an I.D. although the way I present it has changed dramatically.

One of the few early purchase I still use is the Pena Coin - a very under rated item.

Perhaps not perfect for walkabout - but the reactions are some of the best...

Oh yeah this is a great product I still get amazed when I pull it out the drawer to do it myself, it's fantastic but I kept ripping the stuff on top of the cup and couldn't find any at the time so put it away and forgot about it. Think I got mine out of a marvins magic set when I was young

"Modern Magic Manual" by Jean Hugard - particularly for the Impossible Knot and Ring on Stick, which have been favourite impromptu effects for over 40 years. There's a Dover reprint.

Oh, you meant tricks? None - they were all rubbish in one way or another. I much prefer books.

My first thing I bought, and one I still like to use is a little packet effect I bought, I dont know its title but in a nutshell, 4 indifferent cards are shown to a spectator; you stack them back up; he thinks of a card; his card is now reversed in the 4 and the other 3 are the selection too. (can have an equally strong slightly different outcome). This cost me £1.50 and is the only packet effect I still use! Its ace! (no pun intended!)
