Im off on't telly...

Postby Mark Waddington » Aug 18th, '08, 14:49

Hi guys,

Just been booked today to appear on channel 4 in about 3 weeks time. Ive been asked to perform a magic trick that can be taught to the presenter. Basically I will perform the effect before the break, and he will come on after the break and see if he can do it.

Has anybody got any suggestions on what i could teach him? Im struggling to think as im still bouncing off the walls with excitement!!!

Thanks

Mark

(as seen on channel 4....)

Wow congratulations!

Hmm well i have no real great ideas yet but you could do something that you think would work well with the presenter in question's character?

Nice one mate.

go for cut and restored rope, the cut short loop version, its visual easy to do and you can ask him whats that he's pulled off the rope is it a sweet.
and he can say "I'm a fraid knot"
then you can always bobo switch it for a sweet, the young, below 40, will know they can learn that in a book from woolies and the older folks will apreciate your not giving anything to secret away.

I take it the presenter won't be giving away the secret?

I'd suggest something pretty much self working like 'poker players picnic' or 'The twenty sixth card', both from RRTCM.

I think, that since this is a paid gig, i should quote my fee for being a magical advisor. :)

seriously.. be aware that in the past, this kind of thing has done magic no favours, since the person you teach is out to show the magician up.

my serious recomendadtion, is to sit down with fulves, and find a good self working trick, that they cant possibly screw up.

NATURALLY YOU DONT TELL THEM THIS.

(That'l be £200, and my name in the credits.)

oh, and dont do the seebroke thing. Its very easy to expose. and its way to good a trick.

How about a simple vanish using a TT?

It was revealed in 'A Night at the Museum' film but virtually no-one will remember by now.

Or... dymanic coins?

seriosly mate go with the rope its got built in outs if he trys to mess with you, disolving knot, pretzle knot, etc and no ones going to give a monkeys if one method is exposed, theres so many other methods just as deviose.

I wasn't talking about revealing the secret to the audience as the brief in the original post was to teach the presenter - and not the audience. Strep asked about this point but perhaps I could have made my suggestion a little clearer.

What I meant was that it would be simple enough to teach the presenter a TT routine that wouldn't get the audience shouting "I know how he did that"

It's just that I think cards would be difficult to teach in a short space if someone wasn't used to handling them and a cut and restored rope would require some sleights.

My thoughts were that something self working or close to it would be best so that the pupil could rely on the presentation rather than the method.

We're talking about learning in a commercial break remember

Why not do something really cheeky, like teach him a joke trick with a one-way force deck. He can have a card selected by an audience member, correctly guess it, and then during the applause he can "accidentally" turn the deck face up and spread for a laugh.
