No - you're stating your opinion.

I've got this really great idea...Look up "restaurant" in the dictionary. I'll put $1,000.00 on the FACT that the definition has NOTHING to do with magicians. People do not go to a restaurant for a show, they go to eat. That is a fact, not an opinion.

Furthermore, you might have heard of some guy named "Michael Close." There are those who feel that he is one of the best restaurant magicians around. Michael Close said of restaurant work, "Where else can you go and get paid to advertise yourself?" Restaurant work isn't where you want to end up, it's where you want to begin at.

The facts are that some people do work - quite succesfully - in resturaunts for tips.

I never stated otherwise. Read my comment: "That doesn't mean that they won't tip..." Yes, of course it is possible to be successful working for tips in restaurants. It is also possible to be successful begging for cash while living in the streets. That is NOT the point. My previous post is not an opinion, it is simple fact.

And, if you're one of those magicians who feels that he deserves tips while working in a restaurant, then you are one of those magicians who does more to ruin our art than elevate it (now, THAT is an opinion).

Mike.

hmm - I really don't want to start an argument here, but I'm starting to get a bit irritated by these comments - so I feel I need to state my case. Mods please feel free to lock this thread, edit if you feel the need...

I don't feel like I deserve tips when performing at a resturant. I have in fact never performed at a resturant. I am considering it and where I stay it seems that the logical sequence of things is to work for tips ( not beg for them and make a pain of youself - but perform magic - and hopefully you'll get a tip). As I said before I was asking advice on how one goes about it - so as not to make a pain of myself asking for tips, but letting the patrons know that although it isn't expected of them - and I'll perform for the joy of it, I am performing for tips. I'm in the position where i have a fairly well paying job - but would like to perform, and make some extra pocket money at the same time - so please don't equate it to begging. It really offends me - I don't need to beg, nor do I equate getting tips as begging.

Michael Jay - I know what a resturant is - I go there often with my family. I have two small kids and i really appreciate when a magician or clown comes and entertains them while we're waiting for the meals to arrive - and I gladly tip - and well. I suggest you think a bit before making such statements.
(now, THAT is an opinion).

Well in this case i wish you'd keep your opinion to yourself ...

There are certainly strong and valid points in both directions here and it's probably a case of 'what suits me won't suit you'. I would also imagine that the acceptance, or otherwise, of performers of any kind at the table will vary between different countries depending on convention and custom.

Perhaps we should just agree to differ on this one and move on to other topics?
