I finally caved in and bought V3 - there's a discount arrangement for those who bought earlier versions (Dan keeps detailed records !) which makes V3 very affordable indeed. Compared to V1 this is a chalk and cheese thing, far, far better and of superb quality. The addition of a PK card as well is an unexpected bonus which lends itself to thoughts of other routines using such a card. Yes the photos can be worrying, they're the same ones you can see in most books and on various websites but the framing and detail on these is of such a high standard they're not just ghoulish props, they strongly resemble genuine images of the time. The bloodstains are equally convincing. With Halloween on the near horizon, this is something to be seriously considered as an addition to the seasonal repertoire if you are likely to be working for appropriate audiences.

Actually..... I have a question. I am excited to try out this effect on a relative that has a big interest in Jack the Ripper. will this actually be a bad thing if he knows some of the photographs of the victims very well. I know the usual OOTW methods, and think that this could go a bit pear-shaped if he can keep track of all the photos etc

any thoughts ?

The 5 photos of the "genuine" Whitechapel victims are not actually used - at least not in the presentation I use which is the "Undertaker" style. And anyway, I don't think there will be any problem at all. Trying not to give the secret away here, so I'm probably making no sense at all!

In short - you'll be okay.

I use the undertaker handling too. To Geordiejester the audience won't keep track of the cards if its done right. There not playing cards so people minds aren't thinking that way. I use extra props to distract the method. By the time the revelation comes they've forgotten the exact details of what came before. It seems totally fair choices all the way through. I've done it a good few times perfectly openly. I've fumbled it badly once and still not had anyone give the right explanation. Very simple effective method.

At some point I'll get some photos of my set up for this one. Lovely dark wooden box, a Victorian thimble, a spoon, a couple of farthings, a medical bottle and a few other little trinkets. I hand these out after the piles have before the piles come back together and discuss the case. I'll put my history notes into a pdf as well when I've got time to neaten them up.

Yep. It's called the Undertaker after a similar effect used by Derren Brown.

yep. I know it well. and to be honest....probably can see how the method works....but always nice to see it written out incase there are subtelties.

does everyone find there are enough pictures now ?! I know they are reduced from original versions....but I was wondering that some versions I watched on youtube were soooo dramatic as there were so many shots to go thru.

I agree. From Hell is very very nice and I recommend it to everyone! It really kills the person you perform it with! The amount of cards is just right and the size is very nice. It really doesnt smell like a card effect the way it is presented now!

I did this the other night, and asked one of the more macabre of the bunch present to be my spec at the table. Sadly his hearing isn't what it should be, so instead of laying down those he thought were alive to the other pile, he simply sent them to the back of the packet in his hands, effectively shuffling the two piles together.

You have no idea how hard it is to cull those photos!!!!!

Next time make sure they understand what they doi before they start - wouldnt want too cull these cards either
