Postby Replicant » Dec 29th, '08, 15:46

Coming in 2009 from Alakazam. Woohoo! Image

Alakazam's Happy New Year email wrote:Mentalism has played a large part in 2008 for Alakazam in association with INNERMIND PRODUCTIONS. For Alakazam Magic, Simon Shaw's DIRECTOR'S CUT has been a runaway hit with us reaching the end of the year and being completely sold out! This simple concept has paved the way to some very powerful routines and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has given us some great feedback and suggestions. Many of you expressed an interest in a second version of the effect but based on horror movies and we have listened! Next year be sure to look out for DIRECTOR'S CUT II: THE HORROR EDITION coming soon!

what next?

Cartoon character deck for kids, and a top trumps style version just for fun.

( actually the top trumps version could be rather good.) :D

I glad I haven't purchased version one yet, this sounds right up my alley, horror, movies.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Ian, don't discount the original version of DC or underestimate the effect on the spectator; the fact that it covers several different film genres means it will probably appeal to a wider range of people than just horror films. I suspect DCII will go down just as well as the original, especially with the right audience and atmosphere. Remember, 'tis all in the performance.

Absolutely agree Replicant I think you need to have both, as Replicant said the origanal will appeal more widely but in the right setting the horror will go down a treat  I hope they will do this one a bit cheaper without the instructions thoe as those who have the original will not need them or full price with instructions.

I assumed they were going to do that, anyway. But now you have cast the seed of doubt in my mind, I could be wrong. It would make sense, though. (The fact that DCII should be slightly cheaper without instructions, not that I'm wrong!)

I have enjoyed the first one and the idea of a horror movie set is nice (although sure to miss off most of my favs), but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay the same amount though for it with just a different set of cards.

As a hobbyist, I'm not sure I could justify another £20-25 on DCII; but I'd wager a working magician would have no such problems. Then again, if CUPS gets a grip, I'm finished....

Just out of curiosity of how these kinds of magic dealings go - is this coming out with Mr. Shaw's blessing/permission?

Because if not, they are actually not adding anything to the original product, other than bringing out a new look to it. It would be like me issuing Triology myself, not changing the handling, but using the Fournier brand instead of bikes/those South African cards that i can't remember the name of right now.

Not wishing to stir the pot, just curious.

I raised some of the questions in this thread with Alakazam and got this reply from Chris Harding...

There will be no special "without instructions" release as there are routines specifically dedicated to the horror version that will come with it. Although all the original routines will be included too, much of the cost of the product reflects the high costs to have the cards specially printed etc.

Yes we are working with Simon on the release of course and it is moving forward excellently with his full support.

So, it looks like we're looking at another £25 or so for the horror set. I wish I could say I'm not going to get this; however, the original DC is one of my few effects that I actually perform on a regular basis and I'm also really into my horror films, sooo....

I've been looking forward to this version for ages and also hoping that other versions will be considered in due course. Of course it would be great to just order a set of cards and work your own routines but, as it's one of Simon's cherished developments, I'm happy to pay the price. It's one of my very favourite effects, it always works well and does wonders for any reputation as a mentalist with, let's be honest, minimuml effort as the cards do all the tricky stuff leaving the performer to do the presentatian and collect the accolades!
