Magic Circle Auditions

Postby Ted » Jan 8th, '09, 16:43

Could anyone who has attended or recently taken an MC audition say whether or not filming of the act is allowed? Also, are there opportunities to bring a guest(/plant)? Finally, I'd be interested to know how many other acts were auditioning that same evening.
Cheers. T.

Contact Naquada. He did his exam in september.( i think)
I think that the numbers vary, but in sure that filming isnt allowed. But he will probably help more than me. I only coach people... I ve not done it myself

I've had a nose around, to no available. Apologies if I've missed something obvious.

I should add that it'll be at the London HQ, if that makes any difference to any forthcoming advice about these details. I'm most interested in the plant element, as it happens.

pinged you a PM back... I'd talk to Rob Cox at the Circle regarding the audition (if you're at that stage you should have already had an interview with him)

he'll be able to let you know the yes and no's regarding filming, 'guests' etc on top of what I've put in my PM to you...

the Magic Circle rules state that no videoing and audio recording may be done inside the HQ withour prior arrangement, so you'd need to pass it by Rob first and see what he says...

That is great. Many thanks.
As a matter of interest, how many other acts auditioned the night you did yours?

ours was one of the first regional ones, run in reading rather than london at the HQ... we had 4 entries to MMC and 4 for entry to AIMC... so 8 in total.. at about 15 -20 mins each!

the four MMC's got through... the AIMC's didn't unfortuatly

On the night that I went for my interview there were three but on the night that I had my audition I was one of two.

Hope that this helps.

I'm assuming that you've had your interview? At the interview they will let you know if they are going to put you forward for an audition and if so, you will be given a guide to your audition and what you should expect as well as a number of do's and don'ts

No, it's early days in the whole process. I'm just being strategic and getting prepared early :)

My guess is that they won't allow stooges so make sure you read the rules or ask the question

I think your biggest restriction here will be bringing in a stooge that isn't a Magic Circle member.

If you can enlist the help of a member, who's entitled to be there, then I think all's fair in love, war and magic.

Stooges are a legitamite tool of the mentalist, after all - they're not illegal or particularly taboo. They're just monumentally impractical for the no-budget solo performer.

You definately won't be allowed to use a stooge and I've a feeling that unless there are special reasons the audition will be a closed affair but it is definately still worth asking the question.

The reason that I say what I say about stooges is that the audition is a test of your magic (sleight of hand) skills, presentation and routining (how the tricks flow during the 8 to 12 minutes).

You also need to take two tricks along to the audition so that the interviewers can get a basic idea of your skill level. Self workers are mentionned in the audition notes as being inappropriate and there is a guide that details the skill levels associated with the sleights that they expect to see performed smoothly.

These notes can be found on the Magic Circle web site and downloaded which I recommend you seek out.

Good luck.
