Not much to ask surely?

You can switch playing cards as they all look the same face down. With pictures you can see which pile they're in and if they switch pile..

You're completely misunderstanding the technique. I can't really correct you without going into the kind of detail that will get this post deleted, but clearly you don't own Devil's Picturebook.

Derren's OOTW is not the regular OOTW.

I do own it and still think the same

Well then your lateral thinking, and/or understanding of how television shows are edited, is very basic.

Absolutely. It's got to be taken into account that though this may be magic, it's also tv entertainment, and that means that many rules may go out the window, and no matter how great Derren's OOTW is, there are a lot of things you just cant tell with magic like this on tv...

-edit- and having just watched it for the first time in ages (and to summarise my post) - the cameraman is definitely on Derren's side.

Ha. Just watched it on YouTube. Clever of him. He slips it in there so casually. Liked the effect too. Much more creepy than the playing cards.

Oh, that's ok then  pardon me for wishing to retain some form of secrecy over magic and performers effects.

Everybody knows that ootw is done using magnets. What you don't see when the camera isn't pointed at the cards is derren uses strong magnets and a complex pulley system to move the cards into the correct pile. So no matter where the undertaker puts them, they'll end up being moved into the dead/alive piles anyway

But seriously, nothing has been given away here. I don't know how ootw works and I still don't know after reading this thread. And anyway, the real secret of magic isn't the inner workings of the trick...

True but its unreasonable to want the camera to show everything plainly. How many tricks are done that require the spectator not see a certain move?
So while some rules as to what is available to see get thrown out the window, the rule of 'never show the same trick twice' also gets discarded.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

You're so wrong mate. I use my twin brother as a body double when I do OOTW.

That's only if you want to use the standard method, Derren's handling is more complex since he fell out with his brother some time back

ootw

Postby spudgun » Nov 13th, '08, 11:56

i think i do a pretty good version of derrens streamlined ootw (i even showed Mr grace it last week) .......but im bamboozled. There is no way at all that you would not be able to transpose the effect from cards to pictures with a bit of thought.....even the S****G element could be done im totally sure. And the last section of it where the magish says something along the lines of "so this card/picture is should be red/makes you feel quite positive" could also be easily transposed. Im pretty sure even without the S****G element its doable once you appreciate the mechanics of it and the patter is subtle and unobtrusive. (as i would like to think my style was) :D .......but i totally adore this effect so much folks

It is exactly the same as OOTW only the need to change the order half way through is eliminated, All I did to work it out was follow through with my deck of cards and did everything derren did. Took me months of pondering untill I finally just followed through

Bingo!

The wonder of the Dead & Alive version of OOTW has more to do with the psychology of the effect than the mechanics, which do seem to be more or less identical to that in DPB.
