From what I have seen one of the chief reasons young men get into magic these days seems to be to chat up women. In my day they got a guitar instead.
There is a whole subculture in which dating is regarded as a game, and the guys swap all sorts of strategies for chatting up women. Experienced pick-up artists, as they call themselves, often recommend a magic trick as a way of getting a woman's attention. I don't imagine it would work if the woman's IQ exceeded her bra size. It's a moranic and creepy way of doing things.
I was out in mixed company recently. Most of the guys were magicians, but had the good grace to do no tricks. Then one of the guys took out sponge balls and began performing for one of the women. He wasn't trying to chat her up or anything, but I could see from the glazed look in her eyes that the evening had just ended for her.
Another popular chat-up technique - and this one is far more successful - is palm-reading.
