Effects that look painful

Postby Beardy » Jun 4th, '09, 21:20

Hey guys! Me again :D

Another question for those with a big fat imagination

Off of the top of my head, I can think of walking on glass, blockhead, and needle through arm

What other effects can be done safely on stage that look like they can cause pain?

I don;t want things like eating glass e.t.c...but something theatrical that can be put down to pain being subjective and "mind over matter"

Cheers guys!

Love

Chris

It'll be a stage thing as well thogh - thats the problem. I'm just throwing some ideas around in my head really, one of which is approaching the subject of pain

I started a thread along these very same lines a couple of months ago and apart from eating glass I got nothing new.
It would appear that blockhead, needle through arm and walking in glass are pretty much it.
I have spent months considering this problem also for a stage show and have come up with nothing practical that I would be willing to perform every night without fear of danger to myself.
Mind you, if you are really want to try something that looks painful how about hanging large weights off hooks attached to your genitals. :D

Andrew Mayne has a certain effect where you saw your finger off. But again it's a closeup miracle.
I remember going to a magic show where the performer lay on a bed of nails, using a very easy and effective stage illusion/phenomenon.

There are a huge amount of stunts that could fit. One idea is to take a lighter and hold your hand out, palm down. Now run the lighter under your palm, over and back. After a few moments you can show your palm - blackened and burnt. But if you keep the lighter moving (a little bit of experimentation will get it right) you will feel heat but not get burnt. The black marks is soot. It looks very good.
Regular fire eating is quite easy and meets the requirements. Looks good on a stage too. Eating a lightbulb is easy and works. But don't try sword swallowing. That requires months of practice and is seriously not easy.
If you take a heavy tin, like sweetcorn or beans, and hold it with the seam against your palm, you can then smash the side of the tin down on your outstretched finger and not feel a thing.
Kung Fu experts place an arrow tip against their adam's apple, then the end against the wall. They walk forward and snap the arrow with their throat. It is daunting but not difficult when you overcome the psychological obstacle. Bending a thin 1cm iron bar, about six feet long, is easy the same way.
The blockhead is easy, but why not place the brick against your crotch and have someone smash it? Or lie catatonic between two stools and have someone smash slabs on your chest. Again it is very easy for someone of moderate fitness, but looks painful.

That reminds me. I once saw Derren do something with a lighter whereby he just held his hand above it and he managed to hold it there longer than 5 people put together. His hand wasn't far away, so does anybody know of a method for this/where it is aquired?
