Postby Loki_The_Coyote » Jun 25th, '09, 03:40

Does anyone know of any dvd's/books etc.. where I could find some good tricks using tarot cards?

Thanks in advance

You should mind taking a look on a thread just recently posted reviewing Stephen Minch's book "Book of Thoth" which details effects utilising tarot cards. Another book of help would be TA Waters. MM&M.

But, a very simple answer to someone wanting to perform with tarot cards. Is... Dont treat them like playing cards or your performance will go to literal H*ll.

Also a piece of advice, if you can open a book on "Card" tricks and mind changing "Cards" to "Tarot Cards" then, and here is the kicker, create your own scripting and presentation!

Its great fun once you are able to realise magical evolution.

actualy, that's what I've been doing all day  I've been experimenting with bringing the devil card up to the top of the deck over and over again in ways impossible

and thanks for the suggestion, I'll check those out for sure

Not really, if you can write a good scenario, you can even involve tarot cards in a poker game.

Mind, Myth and Magick by T. A. Waters contains some excellent material on Tarot; advice and tips as well as some superb effects and utility moves. MuTarot has to be one of my favourites. MMM may seem like an expensive book (£50-ish), but when you look at the material that it contains, I think it is actually way underpriced. The Book of Thoth by Stephen Minch is also very good indeed and slightly more affordable than MMM.

Also, this thread may interest you...

Also look at Turn of a Friendly Card by Jim Magus and another book of his that I can't remember right now.

Forgot to mention Rick Maue's Book of Haunted Magick. Bloody brilliant book and several great Tarot effects are included.

Indeed. There are people who genuinely believe I have "the gift" even though I deny it because I give readings before I see the cards they choose. They're genuine readings, but with a powerful presentational edge.

Top of my mind... ACR with patter altered perhaps. You could say the person, being ambitious, is drawn to a certain card and so on...

Craig doesn't like mixing tarot cards and magic. But I'm sure he'll explain if he decides to make an appearance. :D

Trouble with routines like ACR is that everyone knows almost instinctively that there is only one Ace of Spades, 7 of Hearts etc in a deck of cards. People aren't generally so familiar with tarot cards. A lot of people I interact with and entertain have never seen or held a pack of tarot before in their lives, they've only seen them in films or on the TV. So, if you're making the Devil card reappear at the top of a deck again and again, well for all the spec knows there may be a dozen Devil cards in a standard pack of tarot. And if you have to explain before you begin that "look, there's only one Devil card in the pack" then whoops, there's the magic gone already.

And of course palming a tarot card or pulling off a DL can be troublesome due to the size and thickness of some cards.

It's a tricky (boom boom) area. Luckily I'm an expert. Magicians tend to over complicate things. When it comes to "magic" that involves the tarot (or any other form of divination) KISS!

Oh, and here's an idea. Rather than doing an ACR with a pack of tarot, why not learn how to "read" them and give the spec a reading instead. I promise you that the spec will be far more interested in having a reading than seeing an ACR. Promise, promise, promise.
