Coin Magic (Very Little Sleight)

Postby Yano » Jul 30th, '09, 03:14

Hi quite new to coin magic, but atm I'm waiting to receive some coin magic i ordered. I ordered HKD Coinshells, HKD Scotch and Soda, and a HKD coin bite.

Now heres the question I'm trying to find some more coin magic tricks to buy, that doesn't really require much sleight of hand like the above products I'm receiving, can anyone name some or think of any coin tricks that would it this criteria? Pretty I'm guessing i want gaffs haha since that i don't want much sleight to be involved.

Thanks in advance

Why no sleights?

I personally think the magic generated with a couple of sleights is often far superior to tricks that rely on props and you can perform impromptu!

I agree with Ant. You really need to use your hands to work with coins, but not all sleights are difficult.

Get yourself a copy of "Self-Working Coin Magic" by Karl Fulves. Once you're used to handling ungimmicked coins, you can progress to Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic".

Umm might seem a bit disrespectful however i do not plan to spend much time to practice coin magic, thus might lead to arguments such as u have to spend time to end up with quality magic. But its just an offbeat for me to have some fun once in a while with different magic that doesn't require me to spend hours and hours to perfect

The books Barry suggests will help you find several easy peasy routines.

I would echo the advice above, but if you're adamant about avoiding sleights, then I would recommend an effect called Penny Change. There are variations on this effect which go by the name of Double X and Chop Suey, to name two. Click here for details.

I'd go with Barry's suggestions too. Get Fulves book so you can start doing a few coin tricks without much preparation and get Bobo' s book so you can practice your sleights in your free time.

I'm doing basically the same thing with cards at the moment. I doing self-working tricks to anyone who asks so I can practice my presentation without worrying about screwing the trick up too much, and I practice my sleight of hand stuff whilst sitting around the flat. When i get more confident with a particular move, I focus on one trick that involves it and then try it out on people- usually between a couple of self-working tricks.

You'll need to know a bit of sleight work to use the shell and coin bite at least. A shell is a utility item and as such unless you want to perform The Wonderful Removal of a Shell you'll need a routine to use it in. As for the coin bite it will enormously enhance your performance if you can switch in the gaff for a borrowed coin rather than showing off with your own.

Don't worry about these things being difficult, there's a million and one ways to switch a coin easily. It would enormously enhance even the occassional impromtu performances you have planned to get used to classic and finger palming coins, doesn't take long.

Hello,
I'm new to this forum and I really dont know if my comment counts or not but coin magic without sleights is like askin' for a Milkshake without Milk?? :?: :?:
I hope it makes sense.

don't knock that, it's amazingly strong for people off their face on something.

Scotch and soda.

Guess what? It doesn't matter if you use gaffs or not. If used properly the audience does not know the difference, so the only real difference is in the mind of the magician. There are some things sleight of hand cannot do and there are some things a gaff cannot do. Best bet is to use them together of course if you go without the gaffs then there is less stuff you have to carry around.

try something simple, really basic with a good effect like the french drop. It's fairly easy. that way you dont need that much practice as it is really simple, its one of the beginner tricks :)
