A new effect.

Postby MagicalSmithy » Nov 6th, '09, 00:22

I saw an effect lately where the magician tells a story using a deck of cards......while apparentely randomly picking them up... such as

(picking up three aces after a 2) The two of us walked in the the club the three aces.

Could I get the name of this trick please and if you know a shop that would sell it as I would like to add it to my serious/comedy repetoir.

Regards justen Smith.

I do not know sorry, It was a friend from a LSM meeting that performed it sometime back and after months of trying to figure it i couldnt....mainly because he actually cuts the deck etc so a normal stack would not have worked.

Yeah sounds like Sam the Bellhop. It involves a bunch of jacks (four guys in the club) and then he gets them the girls (the queens) and then they need money, so he gets them the tens (as in ten dollars). If that is the rough idea of the trick you mean, then yes, definately Sam the Bellhop.

Unfortunately, for the life of me I cant remember where I saw it, but thats what you are looking for. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

There are, quite literally, dozens of versions of this routine.

Rich Bloch does a particularly funny version of two brothers.

In my monthly Linking Ring magazine column, Showtime, of November, 2002, is my full deck routine, titled The Shakespearean Actor.

Anyone wishing a free copy just e-mail me and I'll send it off to you. No PMs, please.

cheers,

You will find a bit of history on the effect here but the best place to learn the effect is on Bill Malone 'On the Loose' volume 1. (The DVD also contains his great Slydini Silks routine)

Peter was kind enough to send this to me at some stage in the past, and I would definatly advise you to take him up on this offer!

There are quite a few version of this dotted around, I think that there's also a version in the Encyclopedia of Card Magic. Bill Malone's version is my favourite.

As noted, Bill Malone has a version. Search for him on YouTube and the routine is there to inspire you.

Mel Mellers has a version too which he has published on one of his DVDs (forget which one). I think that Me's version cleverly joins two cards to make one word 3-10 becomes "threaten" or whatever it is.

There are quite a few versions of the story deck. Simon Lovell does one (saw it on a Trik-a-tape ages ago) as does Wayne Dobson (in one of his Dobsons choice booklets) and David Regal has one in his book Approaching Magic too called After Hours (i think).

Wayne's routine is The Englishman in New York and is in his WD40 book ( see http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic24237.php ) as well as in the first of the Dobson's Choice books. (see http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic3309.php& ) and, of course, Sam The Bellhop by Bill Malone is a classic ( see ....the Search function :D ! )

You might like to have a look at the World's Greatest Magic DVD on Storytelling Decks:

In this collection, you'll meet five performers each with their own individual take on this longstanding card magic tradition. Up first is David Regal who weaves a tale about a visit to a night spot of questionable repute. Michael Ammar then performs and explains Eric Mead's great story deck routine, notable for the impression that it leaves on the audience that the story the cards tell is being improvised on the spot by the performer. Bill Malone is next with his signature version of Sam the Bellhop, who also shares every single false cut, false shuffle and flourish used in the routine - the elements that make his routine such a modern-day classic - all in minute detail. The tale of Sam the Bellhop is then revisited in very hilarious fashion by Doc Eason, who keeps the audience on edge by making them think the routine has gone spectacularly wrong but naturally brings it to a smashing conclusion. Finally, Eugene Burger charms his way through the classic Diamond Jack routine, suitable for close-up or platform, and then shares some great tips on memorizing and performing a story deck routine that can be implemented no matter which version you choose to learn.
