Postby Kemo » Jan 14th, '10, 03:03

Does any one know some good quick card tricks?

By quick i mean 10-20seconds long. 30 seconds at max.

The only one I have is "Here then There"

If you know of any could you please Just tell me the name of it and I'll see if I can find a book with it.

Thanks for your help.

2 phase card to mouth?
Card to shoe?
Spun out card reveal?
4 Aces Transpo?
Colour changes?

Most commercial effects can be made to fit in under 20 seconds I believe. If you spin things out too long, then spectators can loose interest, particularly for openers.

I am looking for openers.

many of my tricks last up to a minute, even 1.5mins and I don't lose their interest.

Right now I just want a greater variety of openers. Fast, high impact card tricks.

the Card to Mouth/shoe effects aren't really my thing, they don't fit my style.

What is the four Ace Transpo? I couldn't find it in any of the books on this sight http://archive.denisbehr.de/ (if you haven`t used this sight, check it out, it`s awesome.)

The purpose of an opener is to grab the attention of the audience and prime them for what they are about to experience in the rest of your performance.

And because of that, I'm with Jay Sankey - I use the card cascade as my simplest opener.

Other than that, arguably more magical openers with cards would be any simple change. As previously mentioned, the paintbrush change is great. I also use the snap change.

I find that a longer effect which gives you a chance to get your personality across is preferable, I open with a routine that is quite lengthy but gives me a chance to get everyones name and have a giggle. The performer needs to be liked by the group rather than walking up and doing a quick piece and them not even saying hi. Don't hide behind your tricks but allow a sense of anticipation build about what you are about to do.

Just my two pence worth, hope it's of somee use

Openers are really subjective I think, lots of magicians do alot of different openers. Sometimes they are short and snappy, sometimes longer with more anticipation building, its just whatever suits you.

Personally I like quite a quick, visual opener. It doesn't mean I can't let my character show through a bit, because I know it so well that I can talk and have fun whilst I do it. Hell, I could do it standing on my head (If I could balance on my head, that is!)

Play around with different openers, see what you like about some of them and what you don't about others, then make up something yourself using those principles.

I'd second a snap change or maybe a colour change effect, the paintbrush is awesome too. If you're going for short and snappy, make it visual because you'll need to compensate for the decreased build up time, so go for a shocker end to the trick.

I like Daniel Garcia's Torn Too as an opener. It's a quick visual restoration that involves a signed card and, depending on your style, can be as short or drawn out as you want it to be. The thing I like most about about signed card effects as openers is that by giving the card to be examined and kept at the end you provide yourself with the perfect piece of misdirection in order to prepare for your next mindblower.
