Openers are really subjective I think, lots of magicians do alot of different openers. Sometimes they are short and snappy, sometimes longer with more anticipation building, its just whatever suits you.
Personally I like quite a quick, visual opener. It doesn't mean I can't let my character show through a bit, because I know it so well that I can talk and have fun whilst I do it. Hell, I could do it standing on my head (If I could balance on my head, that is!)
Play around with different openers, see what you like about some of them and what you don't about others, then make up something yourself using those principles.
I'd second a snap change or maybe a colour change effect, the paintbrush is awesome too. If you're going for short and snappy, make it visual because you'll need to compensate for the decreased build up time, so go for a shocker end to the trick.
