Oh my... quite annoyed right now, will think of some intellectual comment later, the revelations did not annoy me, the fact that they told people about online stores annoys me, anyone could now have access to these things.

erm...you know what happens when you google the word magic, don't you?

two adverts, and links at the bottom of the page saying "learn magic", "buy magic" etc, etc...even a baboon could manage that..

Yes but people don't think of buying magic online, it makes us all look like we buy stock props and have no skill. Its more of a * take than anything else, like someone said earlier.

Anyone who knows how to use Google already has access to them. They'd still have to spend their money to get to the secrets within though and that usually stops the average mildly interested person. Nobody is going to spend £30 on a book just to find out how a trick works.

Of course people think of buying online. Cripes not like the yellow pages has heaps of stores in it.
First thing I did was find some stores, second was join here. Third was to take all the named effects from here and google them. Job Done.

i don't agree - of course people think about buying magic online...where do you buy yours? how did you find out where to buy stuff in the first place?

worrying about what a tv show says is pointless...nothing you can do, and as i said, it has roughly 1.35 million viewers...no great shakes in the scheme of things...

EDIT - and aren't you setting up a youtube channel for mentalism?

OK, after reading back that post i was a little hasty in my first statement, i still think the second part stands though and this is a generalized problem that well all face.
Also, the tube channel is not for exposure its just for performance videos aimed at the general public rather than just the few of us on forums like this that want to see someones take on something. No exposure, just what the audience is meant to see.

This show is generally ****. I watched an episode some time ago thinking it would be something I'd enjoy. The presenters are the most irritating tosspots I've ever come across. No matter how much I love technology and gadgets they make this show unwatchable. They're the kind of people you would never get bored punching their stupid faces.
I watched this show tonight despite my hatred of the presenters and thought it was a disgrace. Shame on Zennon, Dynamo and Drake.
I've never had an issue with the masked magician. Maybe it's because he focuses more on illusions but I think it's because a lot of his methods are out dated or simplified and generally it is possible to change the performance of an effect to prevent people linking what you are doing to anything he has done. Incidentallly, anyone who thinks people just forget what he does are just plain wrong. This is the same thinking that leads to magicians thinking the spectators don't have a clue what you've done or how you did it. They do. The audience are not stupid and if you think they forget everything he has done then I'm afraid you most certainly are. Never think this way.
So why did I think the gadget show was far more of a disgrace than the masked magician? I suppose partly because I perform a drawing dupe and anyone who has seen this will be thinking of electronic devices. Generally though it was the attitude towards magic. Not only did it take the **** it seemed to show how easy it all is, anyone can do it, even the morons who present this show. The card trick was ridiculous, no one could take this seriously and anyone who can force a card could perform it without spending thousands. Still it used technology that TV magicians have employed and even when this level of technology isn't used people may assume it is. That I guess is my main problem, I don't use an electronic dupe pad (although I LOVE the latest from a certain Danish genius) but if you have seen this show you will assume I do. People who have seen this will assume we are using gadgets all the time, it makes sleight of hand and hours of practice seem pointless. The shows message was simple. Magic is easy, buy a few gadgets and you can do anything your favourite tv magicians can do. Zenon, Dynamo and Drake endorsed this attitude. My complaint isn't so much about exposure of a single trick. More about it's attempt to destroy any thought of artistry, skill and performance behind what we do.

To be honest though, I do think in reality if the audience think we all buy stock props then thats actually kinda true.

Ok not everyone, before peeps start saying oh not me.

Look at Blackpool. Nearly 4000 magicians. I didnt even know there were that many before I 'knew'. How many people buy set tricks or pieces ? Thousands and thousands. If they didnt the magic stores would be in business and have so many of them around albeit online.

i think the audience are generally right !

Get over it guys. I promise you it won't make any difference to you if you are a well practiced and well performed magician.

"I want to do magic...but I don't want to be referred to as a magician." - A layman chatting to me about magic.

There are more secrets given away by people who perform magic badly i.e. Buying a trick and performing it without..."Practice practice and then when you think you have got it practising it again"

I'm performing in front of 500 people next week (and yes, I'm a nervous wreck, it's a brand new show and I was hoping to try it out on a slightly smaller audience first!!) If one person in that audience saw the gadget show and then sees my drawing dupe they will link the two. There is no doubt about it, the two look identical from an audience point of view, the only difference is that mine cost £3.99 from staples. If this person tells their friends and they tell theirs word will soon get around.
This as far as I can tell will make a difference.

They are there to be entertained. I doubt those who notice will really care as lets face it - magic isnt real. (not in terms of poof and thin air)

How many of us have watched other good magicians even though we know a possible method dont care, we are still entertained ? Albeit in a different way, but entertained none the less. ( i did say good magicians lol)
