:)

I have this theory. If you put Derren into a room full of mentalists.. you would still ony have a room full of mentalists.

You could say that if you put a mentalist into a room full of magicians you'd still have a room full of magicians as long as a member of the public was looking at it.

You'd be being a belligerent troublemaker if you said that though.

Maybe he meant Mazuma? :-)

Surely he can't mean Paul Daniels??! In the 1980's he commanded the biggest non-soap TV audiences week in week out (and never needed to rely on talentless singing hopefuls or exorbitant-phone ins), Daniels is never really given the respect he deserves amongst British magicians.

OK, I remember hearing some rather unsavoury stories about the way he sometimes acted to those working around him but from a performance perspective, I find it hard to argue against the positive impact he had on magic in this country.

Or maybe it's just an age thing... he's not as cool as Dynamo I suppose is he? (or should that be 'innit'?)

cool as Dynamo

those two words should never go together.

The reason that alot of people hate magicians is because of that Paul Daniels idea. Thats their earliest memory of magic. My missus is scared to death of him...most of the public have three views...Daniels,Blaine,Brown...all good in their own right, but make the public always typecast the rest of us.

I dont like blue cheese.

I wouldnt wish Blue cheese would vanish, because I'm aware that lots of people do like it.

It's posisble that he is the reason why some people dont like magic. But I can hand on heart guarentee that he is also the reason many more do like it.

And good thing too!, because every booking you get, is because the booker wants to see a live magician.. and that booker, got his or her taste for magicians, from television... and probably that means Daniels.

Your not old enough to realise this, but the reason many people dont like him, is because he was, ( and sometimes still is) Target number one in some of the lower end fleet street rags.

The british press, have this appetite for ruining sucess. They hate it.

And some of the mud they threw at him stuck..

go see the man live, Its a master class in audience handling.

P&D are very good at taking the mickey out of themselves - I just wish a few more 'names' would do the same, magician's egos are far too big at times!

PS I'm not keen on Blue Cheese either...

It certainly is! His handling of the Zapped routine is a thing of beauty... in fact, I happen to know one of our very own TM members here has a personal story to relate when they were picked as a volunteer for this very routine.

Obviously, I am not going to reveal anything here (for a start, it's not my story to tell!) but the details that were relayed to me about the manner is which PD controlled the whole routine sounded absolutely pitch-perfect!
